Transition Metal Dissolution in Lithium-Ion Cells: A Piece of the Puzzle

Seoung-Bum Son et al.

Summary: Static leaching tests were conducted on chemically delithiated positive electrode materials, including LiFePO4, LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiNiO2, and LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2. The solvent used in the experiments was ethylene carbonate (EC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), instead of the typical electrolyte containing LiPF6. The results showed the presence of lithium-bearing species in the product liquids, such as Li(EC)+ and Li(EMC)+. Moreover, the positive and negative ion mass spectral results indicated the presence of electrolyte degradation products, with the positive ions tending to coordinate with lithium and the negative ions tending to complex with transition metals.

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: Effective passivation of aluminum current collector at high potentials is crucial for the long-term operation of lithium-based batteries. However, the non-aqueous liquid electrolytes used in these batteries are corrosive towards aluminum, despite their other desirable features. This study proposes the use of DMFSA as an electrolyte solvent to suppress aluminum corrosion, and demonstrates that it leads to significantly reduced corrosion and improved stability of the current collector.

Interfaces and interphases in batteries

Kang Xu

Summary: Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is the first-ever battery operating on dual-intercalation chemistries and relying on interphases on both electrodes, which ensures reversibility. The commercial success of LIBs highlighted the importance of interphases, but their existence predates the birth of LIBs. This perspective aims to shed light on the evolution of our knowledge about interfaces and interphases, which hold the key to enable the next generation battery chemistries.

Non-Flammable Electrolyte Enables High-Voltage and Wide-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries with Fast Charging

Yeguo Zou et al.

Summary: Electrolyte design is crucial for improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries. However, conventional electrolytes pose safety risks due to their flammability and reactivity at high voltage and extreme temperatures. In this study, a non-flammable fluorinated ester electrolyte was designed, which demonstrated high cycling stability and superior power capability for a graphite||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) battery operated at high voltage (>4.3 V vs. Li/Li+) and wide temperature variations (-50 degrees C-60 degrees C). Furthermore, the research provided new insights into the molecular-level dynamics and interactions among Li+, solvent, and anion, and facilitated the development of high-safety and high-energy-density batteries for harsh conditions.
