Controlled Crystal Plane Orientations in the ZnO Transport Layer Enable High-Responsivity, Low-Dark-Current Infrared Photodetectors

Darshan H. Parmar et al.

Summary: Colloidal quantum dots (CQD) are attractive materials for infrared photodetector applications due to their tunable bandgaps and easy processing. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is commonly used as the electron-transport layer (ETL) in CQD photodetectors, but it requires continuous ultraviolet (UV) illumination to maintain high external quantum efficiency (EQE). This research shows that ZnO is dominated by electropositive crystal planes, leading to excessive oxygen adsorption, high trap density, band alignment shift, and poor performance. By developing an electroneutral plane composition through atomic layer deposition (ALD), this problem is addressed and low dark current and high EQE can be achieved without UV activation.

Quantum-Size-Effect Tuning Enables Narrowband IR Photodetection with Low Sunlight Interference

Joao M. Pina et al.

Summary: This study presents colloidal quantum dot photodetectors operating at 1370 nm wavelength and evaluates their outdoor performance. The use of surface-ligand engineering strategy enables high external quantum efficiency and low dark current. Outdoor testing demonstrates the superior signal-to-background ratio compared to Si-based photodetectors.

Electron-Transport Layers Employing Strongly Bound Ligands Enhance Stability in Colloidal Quantum Dot Infrared Photodetectors

Yangning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study develops a new class of electron-transport layers (ETLs) using n-type colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) for CQD photodetectors. By tuning the band energies and surface ligand engineering of CQDs, photodetectors operating at 1450 nm are demonstrated with low dark current and high external quantum efficiency. Furthermore, stable CQD photodetectors are achieved by using strongly bound organic ligands.

Facet-Oriented Coupling Enables Fast and Sensitive Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodetectors

Margherita Biondi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to improve facet alignment in CQD solids by adjusting the surface of CQDs, leading to enhanced coupling and improved performance of optoelectronic devices. This approach results in a 10x increase in hole mobility compared to control CQD solids, and enables photodiodes with 70% external quantum efficiency and rapid response times.
