Versatile full-colour nanopainting enabled by a pixelated plasmonic metasurface

Maowen Song et al.

Summary: The development of modern digital displays and colour printing has driven the rapid advancement of colouration technologies. Metasurface-based structural colouration shows high colour saturation, wide gamut palette, chiaroscuro presentation and polarization tunability. However, previous approaches cannot simultaneously achieve all these features. In this study, we demonstrate a surface-relief plasmonic metasurface that allows independent control of colour hue, saturation and brightness through variations in the geometric dimensions and orientation of shallow nanoapertures. Microscale artworks with photorealistic and stereoscopic impressions are fabricated using a reusable template-stripping technique. Furthermore, different combinations of incident and reflected polarized light can decode kaleidoscopic information states.

Dynamic brain spectrum acquired by a real-time ultraspectral imaging chip with reconfigurable metasurfaces

Jian Xiong et al.

Summary: Spectral imaging plays an important role in various fields, especially in biomedical research. However, current spectral imaging techniques cannot achieve high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolution simultaneously. In this study, a silicon real-time ultraspectral imaging chip based on reconfigurable metasurfaces was developed, which offers high accuracy and resolution. Imaging of brain hemodynamics and the absorption properties of hemoglobin in a rat barrel cortex were successfully obtained, providing insights for in vivo spectroscopy studies and real-time applications.

Fourier Optical Spin Splitting Microscopy

Junxiao Zhou et al.

Summary: FOSSM is a new quantitative phase imaging methodology that uses a metasurface located at the Fourier plane of a polarized microscope to separate the object image into two replicas of opposite circularly polarized states. The bias retardation between the two replicas is tuned by translating the metasurface or rotating the analyzer. Combined with a polarized camera, FOSSM enables single-shot quantitative phase gradient imaging, greatly simplifying the complexity of current phase microscope setups.

Vectorial Holograms with Spatially Continuous Polarization Distributions

Dandan Wen et al.

Summary: Metasurface-based holography offers new opportunities for applications like optical displays, data storage, and optical encryption. The experimental demonstration of a vectorial hologram with spatially continuous distribution of polarization states opens up possibilities for unlimited polarization states within an image. The holographic image and its polarization map are independent, allowing the same image to be encoded with different polarization maps.

Spin-decoupled metasurface for simultaneous detection of spin and orbital angular momenta via momentum transformation

Yinghui Guo et al.

Summary: This research utilized the inherent orthogonality of spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum of photons to expand the dimensions of quantum information. A method for vortex recognition through a single-shot measurement was proposed, along with spin-controlled dual-functional photonic momentum transformations for sorting SAM and OAM simultaneously. The experimental results demonstrated good agreement with numerical modeling and showed potential for developing integrated and high-dimensional optical and quantum systems.
