Summary: With the exponential increase in mobile users, the demand for mobile data has grown tremendously. To meet these demands, cellular operators have been innovating to enhance the capacity of cellular systems. However, existing small cells are unable to meet the rising data traffic due to data-intensive applications. To provide quality of service guarantees, cellular operators have started leveraging the unlicensed spectrum and coexisting with Wi-Fi. This paper presents an overview of past, present, and future research in small cell and unlicensed coexistence communication technologies, and discusses future research work in the newly allocated unlicensed spectrum.

Summary: The increasing popularity of virtual reality and augmented reality applications highlights the need to enhance the implementation of extended reality (XR) for users. There is considerable interest in tactile Internet (TI) from both academia and industry. The use of haptic communication becomes even more crucial with the growing use of virtualization technologies to create robust tangible systems and establish an optimal balance between interaction modalities and human-machine interaction. The current wireless mobile networks are insufficient for meeting the requirements of ultra-low latency, massive computational capability, and high communication bandwidth that are crucial for XR and TI applications. A simplified tangible XR system is proposed, along with the opportunities and challenges associated with its implementation.
