Joint global metric learning and local manifold preservation for scene recognition

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: Scene recognition is crucial in computer vision tasks, but the performance is often hindered by the variations in spatial position, illumination, and scale of scene images. To overcome this challenge, a joint global metric learning and local manifold preservation (JGML-LMP) approach is proposed. By integrating global and local information, this approach achieves more discriminative and robust feature representations for scene recognition.

Content and context features for scene image representation

Chiranjibi Sitaula et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new feature extraction approach for scene image representation using content features and context features. New content features are generated by multi-scale foreground and background information, while new context features are generated by a novel compact supervised codebook. Experimental results show that the fusion of the proposed two types of features significantly outperforms numerous state-of-the-art features.

Recognition of varying size scene images using semantic analysis of deep activation maps

Shikha Gupta et al.

Summary: Understanding the complex semantic structure of scene images requires mapping images to high-level semantic space, where scene images are represented by posterior probabilities of concepts. The study proposes a novel approach of building concept models using pseudo-concepts generated from deeper convolutional layers of CNNs. By preserving true-concept structure in images and optimizing pseudo-concepts through kernel clustering and dynamic-based support vector machines, the resulting SMN representation captures semantic concepts better and achieves state-of-the-art classification accuracy on various scene image datasets.
