Towards a comprehensive sustainability methodology to assess anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems: Review of the integration of Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Risk Assessment and Ecosystem Services Assessment

Laura Vittoria De Luca Pena et al.

Summary: Various methodologies are available to assess impacts of human activities on ecosystems, but integrating them is essential to achieve comprehensive assessments. Three categories of integration are distinguished: post-analysis, integration through the combination of results, and integration through the complementation of a driving method. Despite the complexity of development and data requirements, integration through the complementation of a driving method is the most recurrent and realistic approach.

Weathering Plastics as a Planetary Boundary Threat: Exposure, Fate, and Hazards

Hans Peter H. Arp et al.

Summary: The weathering of plastic pollution in the marine environment poses a threat to the planetary boundary with increasing exposure, poorly reversible pollution fate processes, and potential toxicological hazards exceeding thresholds in sensitive environments. Further research is needed to understand how increasing exposure and continuous weathering processes modulate toxicological hazards and to better parameterize the planetary boundary threshold for plastic pollution.
