Targeting pain in the long-term treatment of cervical dystonia with botulinum toxin A

Michal Marciniec et al.

Summary: Cervical pain is a common non-motor symptom of cervical dystonia (CD) that affects a majority of patients. This study found that cervical pain may increase the severity of muscular symptoms and disease-related disability. Botulinum toxin has a noticeable antinociceptive effect in the long-term treatment of CD.

VAS and NRS, Same or Different? Are Visual Analog Scale Values and Numerical Rating Scale Equally Viable Tools for Assessing Patients after Microdiscectomy?

Joanna Bielewicz et al.

Summary: This study compared the viability of the numerical rating scale (NRS) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) as pain assessment tools among patients who underwent microdiscectomy. The results showed that NRS-L and NRS-B ratings remained at a similar level while VAS and ODI decreased after 3 months. The measurement of NRS-L 1 month after microdiscectomy seems to give quick insight into the effectiveness of the procedure.

Pain in cervical dystonia: mechanisms, assessment and treatment

Raymond L. Rosales et al.

Summary: Pain in cervical dystonia (CD) is a major factor contributing to disability and social isolation, leading patients to seek treatment. The article reviews the epidemiology, assessment, possible mechanisms, and treatment of pain in CD, including a meta-analysis of data on abobotulinumtoxinA in randomized controlled trials. Botulinum toxin chemodenervation is considered the primary treatment for CD, with evidence suggesting that both muscle and non-muscle based mechanisms may contribute to pain in CD.
