Hadronic signatures from magnetically dominated baryon-loaded AGN jets

Maria Petropoulou et al.

Summary: Blazars are a rare class of active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets towards the observer. In this study, we investigate electron-proton jets energized via magnetic reconnection. The blazar spectral energy distribution (SED) is found to be dominated by synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation, while hadronic-related processes have a minor contribution. Low-luminosity blazars are associated with slower jets and higher magnetizations, resembling BL Lac objects, while high-luminosity blazars have faster jets and lower magnetizations, resembling flat spectrum radio quasars. Neutrino emission is expected to be dim in high-luminosity blazars and subdominant except for the highest magnetization considered.

Current-driven kink instabilities in relativistic jets: dissipation properties

G. Bodo et al.

Summary: We analyze the evolution of current-driven kink instabilities in a highly magnetized relativistic plasma column and focus on its dissipation properties. The formation of thin current sheets where magnetic energy is dissipated occurs during the instability evolution. The dissipation occurs in two stages, with a peak stage characterized by the formation of a helicoidal current sheet and a weaker stage with turbulence development. The results have implications for high energy astrophysical sources.

The prototype X-ray binary GX 339-4: using TeV γ-rays to assess LMXBs as Galactic cosmic ray accelerators

D. Kantzas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the possibility of smaller scale jets in transient outbursts of low-mass black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) being sources of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). By modeling the electromagnetic spectrum and using constraints, the predicted gamma-ray spectrum of these BHXBs is investigated, and the potential detection of other low-mass BHXBs by future gamma-ray facilities is explored.

Jet Parameters in the Black Hole X-Ray Binary MAXI J1820+070

Andrzej A. Zdziarski et al.

Summary: By studying the jet of the accreting black hole binary MAXI J1820+070, significant constraints on jet parameters such as opening angle, emission distance, and magnetic field strength have been obtained. Variability power spectrum breaks are consistent with travel time along the jet at different Lorentz factors. The jet's power source is identified as magnetically arrested flow accretion, similar to core shifts observed in extragalactic radio sources.

ExHaLe-jet: an extended hadro-leptonic jet model for blazars - I. Code description and initial results

M. Zacharias et al.

Summary: The processes operating in blazar jets are still not fully understood. In this paper, a new extended jet code is presented, which considers the processes of relativistic protons and electrons simultaneously and derives the particle evolution and photon spectra computationally efficiently. It is found that external photon fields play a crucial role in particle-photon interactions, governing the resulting photon and neutrino spectra.

Bhjet: a public multizone, steady state jet plus thermal corona spectral model

M. Lucchini et al.

Summary: Accreting black holes, especially those launching jets, are of great interest in astronomy due to their ability to accelerate particles and affect their surroundings. A self-consistent theoretical model that can describe black hole systems of different masses is crucial for studying various astrophysical sources. This paper presents an improved scale invariant, steady-state, multizone jet model and publicly releases the code for further applications.

The X-Ray Binary Population in the Galactic Center Revealed through Multi-decade Observations

Kaya Mori et al.

Summary: Investigating the quiescent and transient X-ray binaries of the Galactic Center revealed a population of about 240-630 tightly bound BH-LMXB candidates with orbital periods of about 4-12 hours, distributed in a disk-like manner aligned with the nuclear star cluster. These findings have implications for XRB formation and the rate of gravitational wave events in other galactic nuclei.

Correlating spectral and timing properties in the evolving jet of the microblazar MAXI J1836-194

M. Lucchini et al.

Summary: By modeling the multiwavelength emission of MAXI J1836-194 during its 2011 outburst, researchers found that the base of the jet can generate hard X-ray emission. Their results demonstrate a correlation between the properties of the X-ray power spectrum and the jet properties, suggesting an underlying physical process regulating both.

Summary: This study presents multiwavelength fast timing observations of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070, revealing highly correlated emission between different bands with time-lags ranging from milliseconds to minutes. Additionally, an evolving power spectral shape with electromagnetic frequency is observed for the first time in a black hole X-ray binary. The study demonstrates the power of time-domain analysis in probing jet physics and accurately measuring jet properties.

Reconnection-driven Particle Acceleration in Relativistic Shear Flows

Lorenzo Sironi et al.

Summary: Investigating particle energization in shear flows, we found that Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in their nonlinear stages generate kinetic-scale reconnection layers that efficiently energize jet particles, providing a first-principles mechanism for particle injection into shear-driven acceleration. Our work supports spine-sheath models of jet emission and explains the origin of radio-emitting electrons at the boundaries of relativistic jets.
