The velocity distribution of outflows driven by choked jets in stellar envelopes

Matteo Pais et al.

Summary: Many stripped envelope supernovae exhibit high-velocity material responsible for broad absorption lines in the observed spectrum. Numerical simulations show that when the jet is not deeply choked within the star, the outflow carries a constant amount of energy per logarithmic scale of proper velocity, which depends on the cocoon volume at the breakout time. This phenomenon provides a natural explanation for the fast material seen in stripped envelope SNe not associated with LGRBs and offers insight into the hidden jets.

Chemical Stratification in a Long Gamma-Ray Burst Cocoon and Early-time Spectral Signatures of Supernovae Associated with Gamma-Ray Bursts

Akihiro Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of 3D hydrodynamic simulations of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) jet, focusing on the formation of high-velocity quasi-spherical ejecta and the jet-induced chemical mixing. The simulations show that a powerful jet can naturally reproduce the density and chemical structure of the observed outer ejecta. The different interactions between the jet and the progenitor star have an impact on the expected early-time electromagnetic signatures of long GRBs, which can be probed through observations.

Observational signatures of stellar explosions driven by relativistic jets

Moshe Eisenberg et al.

Summary: The role of relativistic jets in unbinding the stellar envelope during a supernova associated with a gamma-ray burst is not clear. Observations suggest that jets are not the sole explosion source, as the collapsing star seems to deposit its energy into two channels - a quasi-spherical channel responsible for the sub-relativistic ejecta and a narrowly collimated channel that produces the gamma-ray burst.

Ultraviolet Spectroscopy and TARDIS Models of the Broad-lined Type Ic Supernova 2014ad

Lindsey A. Kwok et al.

Summary: This study presents the first UV spectra for the broad-lined Type Ic supernova 2014ad, showing higher ejecta velocities compared to other SNe Ic. Models of the UV+optical spectra require high densities at high velocities to reproduce the observed features, with a steep density profile at low velocities. The results imply a higher total ejecta mass than estimated from previous analysis, possibly due to a flattening of the density profile at low velocity and extra emission near the center of the ejecta.

Core-collapse supernova explosion theory

A. Burrows et al.

Summary: Supernova explosions result from the death of massive stars, giving birth to neutron stars and black holes while ejecting solar masses of heavy elements. The delayed neutrino-heating mechanism is emerging as the key driver, but there are still many issues to address, such as the chaotic dynamics involved.

Two-dimensional Radiation-hydrodynamic Simulations of Supernova Ejecta with a Central Power Source

Summary: The study shows that a powerful central energy source in supernova ejecta can enhance the efficiency of radiation escape through multidimensional mixing, resulting in bright thermal emission. This finding suggests a potential explanation for the diversity of energetic supernovae.

Proto-magnetar jets as central engines for broad-lined Type Ic supernovae

Swapnil Shankar et al.

Summary: The study suggests that some high-energy SNe Ic-bl may be driven by jets from proto-magnetars, with a potential connection to GRBs. The results show that central engines with smaller opening angles are more likely to form GRBs, while those with larger opening angles are less likely to form GRBs.

Summary: Analysis of double-peaked light curves in Type Ic supernovae suggests similar circumstellar matter structures, implying a common mechanism for their formation. The implied high mass-loss rate cannot be explained by previously suggested scenarios, calling for a novel mechanism.

High-entropy ejecta plumes in Cassiopeia A from neutrino-driven convection

Toshiki Sato et al.

Summary: Recent observations in the galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A have detected stable titanium and chromium elements in the high-velocity Fe-rich ejecta, providing evidence for the existence of high-entropy ejecta plumes that help boost shock waves during explosion. The observed mass ratios of Ti/Fe and Cr/Fe suggest the presence of alpha-rich freeze out, supporting predictions for strongly neutrino-processed proton-rich ejecta, in line with the operation of the convective supernova engine via neutrino heating in supernovae like Cassiopeia A.
