The Effects of Stellar Population and Gas Covering Fraction on the Emergent Lyα Emission of High-redshift Galaxies*

Naveen A. Reddy et al.

Summary: We perform joint modeling of the composite rest-frame far-UV and optical spectra of star-forming galaxies at redshift between 1.85 and 3.49. Our analysis reveals that the covering fraction of optically thick H i is the major factor modulating the escape of Ly alpha photons. Moreover, a high star-formation-rate surface density coupled with a low galaxy potential can aid in reducing the covering fraction and ease the escape of Ly alpha photons.

The synchrony of production and escape: half the bright Lyα emitters at z ≈ 2 have Lyman continuum escape fractions ≈50 per cent

Rohan P. Naidu et al.

Summary: The ionizing photon escape fraction is a significant unknown factor in reionization research. By inferring the escape fraction using Lyα profiles, this study identifies distinct differences between LyC leakers and non-leakers. The leakers exhibit extreme equivalent widths and high ionization rates, suggesting a close relationship between these characteristics and photon escape.

The Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey. II. New Insights into LyC Diagnostics

Sophia R. Flury et al.

Summary: This study presents the first statistical test of indirect diagnostics for identifying Lyman continuum emitters (LCEs). The results show that the escape of Lyman continuum strongly depends on H i column density, ionization parameter, and stellar feedback, and it is related to galaxy properties such as stellar mass and metallicity.

The Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey. I. New, Diverse Local Lyman Continuum Emitters

Sophia R. Flury et al.

Summary: The study presents the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) with measurements of 66 galaxies at a redshift of z=0.2-0.4, detecting a total of 35 Lyman continuum emitters (LCEs) with 97.725% confidence, nearly tripling the known local LCEs. Among these, 12 LCEs have LyC escape fractions greater than 5%, more than doubling the number of known local LCEs with cosmologically relevant LyC escape.

The VANDELS survey: a measurement of the average Lyman-continuum escape fraction of star-forming galaxies at z=3.5

R. Begley et al.

Summary: This study aims to measure the average Lyman-continuum escape fraction of star-forming galaxies at around 3.5. By analyzing a sample of 148 galaxies, the study reveals a positive correlation between the escape fraction and Ly a equivalent width, and an inverse correlation with intrinsic UV luminosity and UV dust attenuation. The study also suggests that galaxy stellar mass is not a primary indicator of the escape fraction.

Searching for the connection between ionizing-photon escape and the surface density of star formation at z ∼ 3

Anthony J. Pahl et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a sample of 35 galaxies at redshift similar to 3 and found no significant difference in the escape fraction of ionizing photons (f(esc)) between two subsamples with different star formation rate surface density (Sigma(SFR)). The researcher suggests that a larger and more representative sample is needed to accurately measure the connection between f(esc) and Sigma(SFR).

LyC escape from sphinx galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization

Joakim Rosdahl et al.

Summary: We measured and simulated the escape fractions of ionizing radiation from galaxies during reionization. The escape fraction fluctuates strongly within individual galaxies and correlates with galaxy mass, brightness, and metallicity. The escape fraction decreases over time and correlates positively with both short-term and long-term specific star formation rates.

The far-ultraviolet continuum slope as a Lyman Continuum escape estimator at high redshift

J. Chisholm et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) and literature observations to uncover the correlation between the continuum slope at 1550 angstrom and the escape fraction of LyC photons. The results show a significant inverse correlation, with redder slopes associated with smaller escape fractions due to dust attenuation. The study also finds strong correlations between the continuum slope and other galaxy properties. Using these findings, the ionizing emissivity of galaxies during the epoch of reionization is predicted.

Lyman continuum leakage from low-mass galaxies with M☆ < 108 M⊙

Y. I. Izotov et al.

Summary: Observations of nine low-mass star-forming galaxies show a tight anticorrelation between Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage and velocity separation V-sep, with V-sep remaining the best indicator of LyC leakage. Contrary to previous expectations, no increase of LyC escape fraction (f(esc)(LyC)) with decreasing galaxy stellar mass M-star was found in this study.

The KBSS-KCWI survey: the connection between extended Lyα haloes and galaxy azimuthal angle at z ∼ 2-3

Yuguang Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents a statistical analysis of kinematically resolved, spatially extended emission around z = 2-3 galaxies in the Keck Baryonic Structure Survey (KBSS) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI). The scattering medium is dominated by outflows in all directions within 30 kpc, with a weak directional dependence of emission in galaxies with relatively weak emission. Further simulations with radiative transfer modeling are needed to understand these findings.

The mean free path of ionizing photons at 5 < z < 6: evidence for rapid evolution near reionization

George D. Becker et al.

Summary: The study shows that measurements at redshift z=5.1 are consistent with existing data, indicating minor bias from the proximity effect. However, at redshift z=6.0, neglecting the proximity effect leads to results biased high by a factor of two or more. This suggests rapid evolution in the mean free path of ionizing photons over the redshift range 5 < z < 6.
