Three-dimensional Global Simulations of Type-II Planet-Disk Interaction with a Magnetized Disk Wind. I. Magnetic Flux Concentration and Gap Properties

Yuhiko Aoyama et al.

Summary: Giant planets can create annulus density gaps in protoplanetary disks, and recent studies have shown that magnetized disk winds, along with turbulence from the magnetorotational instability, play a significant role in disk evolution. Through 3D global simulations, it has been found that the planet triggers magnetic flux concentration around its orbit, leading to enhanced angular momentum removal in the gap. The resulting gap shape is similar to an inviscid disk, but deeper, and the corotation region exhibits characteristics such as asymmetric accretion flow and weakened meridional flow.

Empirical constraints on turbulence in proto-planetary discs

Giovanni P. Rosotti

Summary: Proto-planetary discs, the birth environment of planets, are commonly found astrophysical structures. The detection of turbulence in these discs has been a long-standing problem, but recent observational studies suggest that turbulence may not be as prevalent as previously thought, and other mechanisms such as MHD winds could be responsible for powering accretion.

An analytical solution to measure the gas size in protoplanetary discs in the viscous self-similar scenario

Claudia Toci et al.

Summary: A robust knowledge of the observed disc radius using gas tracers such as (CO)-C-12 is pivotal to understand the mechanism responsible for accretion in protoplanetary discs. This letter presents an analytical solution for the evolution of disc radii in viscously evolving protoplanetary discs using (CO)-C-12 as a tracer, assuming that the (CO)-C-12 radius is the radius where the surface density of the disc is equal to the threshold for CO photodissociation. Our results suggest that freeze-out also plays an important role in setting the disc size, in addition to photodissociation.

Leaky dust traps: How fragmentation impacts dust filtering by planets

Sebastian Markus Stammler et al.

Summary: By performing numerical experiments, researchers found that an early-formed Jupiter core could create a gap in the protoplanetary disk and trap dust particles drifting inward at the outer edge of the gap, leading to a rapid isotopic difference between the inner and outer disk materials. However, the simulation results are inconsistent with the meteoritic record, suggesting the involvement of other processes in the isotopic separation between the inner and outer Solar System.

Gap-opening Planets Make Dust Rings Wider

Jiaqing Bi et al.

Summary: By using three-dimensional dust-and-gas disk simulations, we find that gap-opening planets can widen dust rings by perturbing the pressure bump, even when the dust-to-gas ratio is close to unity and the dust back-reaction is considered. We quantitatively demonstrate the planet-related widening effect on dust rings using diffusion-advection theory, and propose a generalized criterion for determining the equilibrium width of dust rings in three-dimensional disk models. We also suggest estimating the ring width using the gas turbulent viscosity alpha (turb), with caution regarding the Schmidt number being greater than unity.

Impact of local pressure enhancements on dust concentration in turbulent protoplanetary discs

M. Lehmann et al.

Summary: The standard core accretion model for planetesimal formation in protoplanetary discs faces challenges due to the vertical settling of dust against turbulent stirring. The vertical shear instability (VSI), sustaining turbulence in the outer regions of PPDs, drives the formation of long-lived vortices that can collect dust and potentially trigger the streaming instability (SI). The presence of pressure bumps in the discs can lead to the formation of dusty vortices with high dust-to-gas ratios, impacting the vertical mass flow profile and alpha viscosity values.

Effect of MHD Wind-driven Disk Evolution on the Observed Sizes of Protoplanetary Disks

Leon Trapman et al.

Summary: The study found that the evolution of gas disks is influenced by disk mass, leading to a linear decrease in size over time. Constant alpha (DW) models are able to reproduce the observed gas disk sizes in star-forming regions of similar to 1-3 Myr old Lupus and similar to 5-11 Myr old Upper Sco, but might overestimate the gas disk size of younger (<0.7 Myr) disks.

The protoplanetary disc around HD 169142: circumstellar or circumbinary?

P. P. Poblete et al.

Summary: Stellar binaries are common among young stellar objects and play a significant role in shaping the structure of protoplanetary discs. The presence of an inner stellar binary and a circumbinary planet in the protoplanetary disc HD 169142 seems to be responsible for the observed structures. The proposed model predicts changes in the dust structure of the disc and the astrometric parameters of the star, which can be tested by monitoring the system over the next 20 years.

Gas Disk Sizes from CO Line Observations: A Test of Angular Momentum Evolution

Feng Long et al.

Summary: The size of a disk encodes important information about its evolution. By analyzing data from a sample of 44 protoplanetary disks, we found that the size range can be explained by different models of viscous evolution or spread of initial conditions. Most disks' sizes are consistent with MHD wind models, but larger initial disk sizes are needed to explain the CO disks in the sample.

Modelling the secular evolution of protoplanetary disc dust sizes - a comparison between the viscous and magnetic wind case

Francesco Zagaria et al.

Summary: This study predicts the time evolution of disc sizes in protoplanetary discs using 1D gas and dust simulations, comparing the results of viscous and magnetic wind models. The study finds that the two models have significantly different dust disc radii, with discs becoming larger over time in the viscous case and maintaining constant or decreasing sizes in the magnetohydrodynamic wind models. While current observations are not sensitive enough to differentiate between the two scenarios, higher sensitivity surveys could provide valuable insights in the future.

Gap opening by planets in discs with magnetized winds

Vardan Elbakyan et al.

Summary: Planets open deep gaps in protoplanetary discs when their mass exceeds a certain critical value. Magnetized winds are less effective than turbulence in counteracting planet tidal torques. The gap opening mass in discs powered by magnetized winds is smaller than in viscous discs. Future high-resolution observations may reveal more super-Earth planets.

Turbulent Transport of Dust Particles in Protostellar Disks: The Effect of Upstream Diffusion

Tingtao Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the long-term radial transport of micron to millimeter-sized grains in protostellar disks (PSDs). The results show that gas drag tends to transport dust radially inward, while stochastic diffusion can spread a significant fraction of dust radially outward (upstream) depending on the turbulence nature. In gravitationally unstable disks, a high radial diffusion coefficient is measured, leading to strong and vertically homogeneous upstream diffusion. This process efficiently transports highly refractory micron-sized grains and can spread millimeter-sized calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions formed close to the Sun. In disks dominated by magnetorotational instability, the upstream diffusion effect is generally milder, with a separating feature due to stronger diffusion in the surface layer than in the midplane.

Survival of planet-induced vortices in 2D disks

Thomas Rometsch et al.

Summary: Through 2D numerical simulations, we find that vortices generated at the outer gap edge can survive for approximately 100-3000 planetary orbits, with the shortest lifetimes occurring under moderately efficient dissipation and cooling. Additionally, we observe long-lasting vortices with lifetimes of at least 15,000 orbits under very low viscosity and very short thermal relaxation timescales. Disk self-gravity significantly impacts vortex lifetimes, allowing both regular and long-lived vortices to persist.

Survival of ALMA rings in the absence of pressure maxima

Summary: Recent ALMA observations have shown that a significant portion of protoplanetary discs exhibit bright rings at (sub)millimeter wavelengths, possibly due to dust trapping induced by pressure maxima. However, it is uncertain whether these pressure bumps can survive over evolutionary timescales. This study suggests that ALMA rings may be a result of a dense, clumpy mid-plane actively forming planetesimals, with a cycle of ring formation and dispersion driven by pebble reservoir feeding.
