Statistical properties and correlation length in star-forming molecular clouds I. Formalism and application to observations

E. Jaupart et al.

Summary: This article applies the ergodic theory to analyze the fluctuations in molecular clouds and derive statistical results. The autocovariance function and characteristic correlation length of these fluctuations are evaluated. Alternative methods to estimate the correlation length when it is difficult to determine from empirical data are also proposed. The article also examines the statistics of density fluctuations and probability density function in star-forming clouds, showcasing the challenges and biases involved. The importance of statistical homogeneity in studying the PDF of star-forming clouds is justified. The article provides a rigorous framework for analyzing the global properties of star-forming clouds from limited statistical observations.

Resolving the Core of R136 in the Optical

Venu M. Kalari et al.

Summary: The sharpest optical images of the R136 cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented, revealing the members of the central core for the first time, including the most-massive star known, R136a1. Using new photometric luminosities, the estimated masses of individual WN5h stars are significantly lower than previously believed, providing critical anchor points for establishing the stellar upper-mass function.

The sonic scale of interstellar turbulence

Christoph Federrath et al.

Summary: Understanding the physics of turbulence is crucial for various applications, including weather, industry, and astrophysics. By presenting a simulation of interstellar turbulence, researchers were able to determine the sonic scale transition and velocity structure, providing quantitative input for models of filament structure and star formation in molecular clouds. Key findings included the measurements of the supersonic and subsonic cascade with velocity as a function of scale, where the transition from supersonic to subsonic turbulence was shown to occur smoothly over a factor of 3 in scale.

Supersonic turbulence in giant HII regions: clues from 30 Doradus

J. Melnick et al.

Summary: The study shows that in 30 Doradus, the cluster wind shapes the structure and kinematics of the nebula, driving most of the turbulence in the nebular gas, with a small contribution from the combined gravitational potential of stars and gas. This rules out a Kolmogorov-like turbulent kinetic energy cascade as the source of supersonic turbulence in GHRs.

Massive young stellar objects in the Local Group irregular galaxy NGC6822 identified using machine learning

David A. Kinson et al.

Summary: A supervised machine learning methodology was used to classify stellar populations in NGC6822, achieving high accuracy in identifying different target classes. The study confirmed the nature of known YSO candidates, identified new YSOs, and characterized the star formation environment in the galaxy. The PRF analysis also definitively classified non-YSO candidates and explored the potential of unsupervised methods for stellar population identification.
