An updated glitch rate law inferred from radio pulsars

M. Millhouse et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stress accumulation and relaxation processes in neutron star interiors through analyzing the glitch rates of radio pulsars. By using all available data, the study finds that the glitch rate is better described by a power law function of the characteristic age, rather than arbitrary functions of the spin frequency or its time derivative. The study also reveals that younger pulsars tend to have higher glitch activity. Additionally, the presence of objects with zero-recorded glitches provides important statistical information, as long as they belong to the same population.

Systematic upper limits on the size of missing pulsar glitches in the first UTMOST open data release

L. Dunn et al.

Summary: This paper presents a systematic and semi-automated search for pulsar glitches in the first UTMOST public data release. Using a hidden Markov model, glitches are detected through Bayesian model selection without much human intervention. Injection studies are used to determine the upper limits on the size of undetected glitches.

Small glitches and other rotational irregularities of the Vela pulsar

C. M. Espinoza et al.

Summary: This study explores the occurrence and sizes of small glitches in the Vela pulsar, finding two previously unreported glitch events. Additionally, numerous small glitch events were identified, contributing to the pulsar's timing noise. The Vela pulsar shows an under-abundance of small glitches compared to other glitching pulsars, with a smooth spin-down process affected by continuous small step-like changes.

Effects of periodicity in observation scheduling on parameter estimation of pulsar glitches

L. Dunn et al.

Summary: The study reveals the degeneracy in certain pulsar timing experiments, highlighting the importance of factors such as frequency jumps and glitch models. While synthetic data and local estimates help alleviate biases, challenges remain in accurately determining glitch sizes. Additionally, hidden Markov models provide unbiased multiple glitch solutions but may struggle with recovering correct glitch sizes.

The impact of glitches on young pulsar rotational evolution

M. E. Lower et al.

Summary: Our study reports a timing program of 74 young pulsars observed by the Parkes 64-m radio telescope over the past decade, revealing properties of 124 glitches in 52 of these pulsars using modern Bayesian timing techniques. We discuss the implications of the results in the context of various physical models, demonstrating a near one-to-one relationship between the interglitch value of the braking index and the change in spin-down of the previous glitch divided by the interglitch time interval.
