Antiglitches in accreting pulsars from superfluid vortex avalanches

G. Howitt et al.

Summary: Three sudden spin-down events, known as 'antiglitches', were recently observed in the accreting pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1. These are the first recorded antiglitches in an accelerating pulsar, unlike previous observations in decelerating magnetars. N-body simulations show that vortex avalanches regularly occur in both accelerating and decelerating containers, with the direction of angular momentum transfer reversed.

Mountain formation by repeated, inhomogeneous crustal failure in a neutron star

A. D. Kerin et al.

Summary: This article presents a macroscopic model of inhomogeneous crustal failure in neutron stars, with predictions on the size and waiting-time distributions of failure events as well as the rate of failure as the star spins down. The output of the model is used to predict the star's mass ellipticity and gravitational wave strain as functions of its age, with implications for future observations with instruments such as LIGO.

Superconducting Phases in Neutron Star Cores

Toby S. Wood et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the possible ground states for the neutron and proton condensates in the core of a neutron star using a Ginzburg-Landau model. We find that the outer core is likely to be a type-1.5 superconductor with inhomogeneous magnetic flux distribution. We also provide a criterion for the transition between different phases and explore the coexistence of fluxtubes and non-superconducting regions.

Vortex pinning in the superfluid core of relativistic neutron stars

Aurelien Sourie et al.

Summary: The recent study adapts the Newtonian treatment of mutual-friction force in neutron superfluid to the general-relativistic framework, showing how the motion of individual vortices can be matched to the global dynamics of the star. The necessary dynamical equations for realistic simulations of rotating neutron stars in full general relativity are derived, with a focus on the role of vortex pinning on global dynamics.

Relativistic fluid dynamics: physics for many different scales

Nils Andersson et al.

Summary: The relativistic fluid model is successful for describing dynamics of many-particle systems in high-speed motion and strong gravity, bridging physics from microscopic to macroscopic scales. The variational principle approach by Brandon Carter distinguishes itself from standard methods by explicitly obtaining the relativistic Euler equation as an integrability condition on the relativistic vorticity.
