SOFIA Observations of 30 Doradus. II. Magnetic Fields and Large-scale Gas Kinematics

Le Ngoc Tram et al.

Summary: The morphology and strength of the magnetic fields in the complex region of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud were studied using far-infrared polarimetric observations. The results show a complex B-field morphology with bending structures around the stellar cluster R136. High resolution observations also reveal evidence of multiple expanding-shells and suggest that the majority of the 30 Doradus clouds are subcritical and sub-Alfvenic. The study suggests that supersonic compressive turbulence plays a role in triggering the formation of a new generation of stars.

Large-scale magnetic field in the Monoceros OB 1 east molecular cloud

D. Alina et al.

Summary: The study investigates the large-scale magnetic field structure and its interaction with gas dynamics in the Monoceros OB 1 east molecular cloud. It reveals an ordered large-scale plane-of-sky magnetic field structure, with different magnetic field orientations in different regions. The study suggests that the magnetic field plays an important role in counteracting gravity in the northern part and guiding gas inflow in the southern part.

Superdiffusion of cosmic rays in compressible magnetized turbulence

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: Due to the complexity of turbulent magnetic fields, modelling the diffusion of cosmic rays is challenging. In this study, test particles are used to examine the superdiffusion of cosmic rays in anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The results show that the displacement of freely streaming cosmic rays in the perpendicular direction follows a power-law relation with the time travelled along local magnetic field lines, while the diffusion in the parallel direction is influenced by the Alfven Mach number.

Velocity gradients: magnetic field tomography towards the supernova remnant W44

Mingrui Liu et al.

Summary: This study verifies the effectiveness of the velocity gradient technique (VGT) in a broader context by applying it to a molecular cloud interacting with the supernova remnant (SNR) W44. The VGT accurately measures the magnetic fields, especially in intense molecular gas emission regions, and shows good agreement with the Planck polarization. However, there is a misalignment between the VGT and Planck measurements in low-intensity molecular gas areas due to the foreground contribution to the polarization.

Magnetic reconnection: MHD theory and modelling

David I. Pontin et al.

Summary: In this article, the authors focus on the fundamental theory of magnetohydrodynamic reconnection and its applications in understanding dynamic processes in the solar corona. They briefly summarize related topics and introduce preliminary topics necessary for a full description of reconnection. The authors discuss the definition and properties of reconnection in three dimensions, as well as the differences between two-dimensional and three-dimensional reconnection. The article also reviews the role of reconnection in solar flares, coronal heating, and the release of the solar wind, and briefly mentions its role in the magnetosphere, the link between reconnection and turbulence, and particle acceleration.

Quasi-perpendicular Shock Acceleration and Tidal Disruption Event Radio Flares

Siyao Xu

Summary: Delayed radio flares of optical tidal disruption events (TDEs) indicate the presence of nonrelativistic outflows accompanying TDEs. The interaction between TDE outflows and the circumnuclear medium generates quasi-perpendicular shocks in the presence of toroidal magnetic fields. Due to the large shock obliquity and outflow velocity, the shock acceleration induced by TDE outflows results in a steep particle energy spectrum. The measured synchrotron spectral indices of recently detected TDE radio flares are consistent with this theoretical expectation, suggesting that quasi-perpendicular shocks may be the general acceleration mechanism responsible for the delayed radio emission of TDEs.

Revealing Gravitational Collapse in the Serpens G3-G6 Molecular Cloud Using Velocity Gradients

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: The study examines the relative roles of turbulence, magnetic fields, and self-gravity in star formation, finding that the Serpens G3-G6 south clump is undergoing gravitational collapse at a certain density. The analysis shows that the magnetic field energy significantly exceeds kinetic and gravitational energy, suggesting that gravitational collapse could be successfully triggered in a supersonic and sub-Alfvenic cloud.

Anisotropies in Compressible MHD Turbulence: Probing Magnetic Fields and Measuring Magnetization

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: Probing magnetic fields in the interstellar medium is challenging, but the Structure Function Analysis (SFA) can be used to estimate magnetic-field orientation and strength. In sub-Alfvenic turbulence, the anisotropic structure functions of turbulent velocities measured in different directions can provide valuable information about the magnetic fields.

Anisotropic Turbulence in Position-Position-Velocity Space: Probing Three-dimensional Magnetic Fields

Yue Hu et al.

Summary: The anisotropic nature of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence provides a novel way to trace the magnetic fields. By extending structure-function analysis in the position-position-velocity (PPV) space, both the three-dimensional magnetic field orientation and strength can be measured simultaneously. Intensity fluctuations in PPV space can reveal magnetic field orientation and strength by varying the channel width.

The JCMT BISTRO Survey: The Distribution of Magnetic Field Strengths toward the OMC-1 Region

Jihye Hwang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new application of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method is suggested to estimate the distribution of magnetic field strengths in the OMC-1 region as part of the JCMT BISTRO survey. The study shows that the magnetic field strengths in the region vary from 0.8 to 26.4 mG, with a mean value of about 6 mG, and there are large uncertainties in the inferred field strengths. The central parts of the BN-KL and South (S) clumps are found to be magnetically supercritical, while the outer parts of the region are magnetically subcritical.

Alignment and Rotational Disruption of Dust

A. Lazarian et al.

Summary: The study reveals the deep connection between alignment of dust grains by radiative torques and mechanical torques and the rotational disruption of grains. It introduces fast and slow disruption mechanisms for grains, discusses the impact of grain magnetic susceptibility on disruption, and highlights the factors affecting the efficiency of disruption processes. The research also shows that the disruption induced by torques depends on the angle between the magnetic field and the anisotropic flow, providing insights into observational testing of grain composition and alignment processes.

Probing the Cold Deep Depths of the California Molecular Cloud: The Icy Relationship between CO and Dust

John Arban Lewis et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between molecular gas and dust in the California Molecular Cloud, covering a wide range of cloud depth. It found that a single X-factor cannot characterize the molecular gas in the cold regions of the cloud, but a single X-factor can be derived for the warm material. In addition, it was observed that CO is completely in gas phase in the warm cloud material and is heavily frozen onto dust across the whole cloud.
