Antioxidant Potential and Enhancement of Bioactive Metabolite Production in In Vitro Cultures of Scutellaria lateriflora L. by Biotechnological Methods

Inga Kwiecien et al.

Summary: Studies have demonstrated the antioxidant activity and non-toxicity of Scutellaria lateriflora microshoot extract. Feeding the microshoots with phenylalanine was found to be the most effective strategy to enhance the production of flavonoids and verbascoside, resulting in a high antioxidant content.

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Baicalin, a bioactive extract from Scutellaria Baicalensis Georgi, has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative functions, and its preventive protection can improve cell apoptosis and Fluorescein sodium infiltration in the brain tissue. Baicalin can also inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines production, up-regulate Claudin-5 and ZO-1 protein expression, reduce ROS and MDA production, promote SOD production, and activate Nrf2-mediated antioxidant stress pathway to protect blood-brain barrier damage.

How Does the Phenol Structure Influence the Results of the Folin-Ciocalteu Assay?

Melanie Platzer et al.

Summary: The FC assay does not measure the polyphenol content of a sample but rather determines its reducing capacity. Different results were observed for phenols representing different subgroups, indicating that the FC results depend on the number of fulfilled Bors criteria for the structure of the phenols.
