Ultrafiltration concentrated biogas slurry can reduce the organic pollution of groundwater in fertigation

Weishen Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrafiltration membrane technology was used to prepare ultrafiltration concentrated biogas slurry (UCBS) to reduce the risk of small-molecule organic pollution of groundwater during land application compared to raw biogas slurry (RBS). Both UCBS and RBS were found to cause nitrate pollution to groundwater, with UCBS having a lower risk of organic pollution. Irrigating UCBS in hydragric anthrosols posed a higher risk of organic pollution to groundwater than in acric ferralsols. Analysis showed that organic pollutants in the leaching solution were mainly small molecules <10 kDa, including fulvic acid, microbial protein metabolites, and humic acid organic compounds.
