Synthetic surfactants in Swiss sewage sludges: Analytical challenges, concentrations and per capita loads

Lena Schinkel et al.

Summary: Surfactants are abundant organic pollutants in municipal wastewater, with linear alkylbenzene sulfonates being the most prevalent contaminant found in Swiss sewage sludge samples. Different surfactants showed varying concentrations in wastewater treatment plants, with their levels reflecting production volumes and fate in the treatment process.

Concentrations, leachability, and health risks of mercury in green tea from major production areas in China

Qingfeng Wang et al.

Summary: Green tea in China has a low potential for mercury accumulation, with the harvest time of tea leaves playing a role in limiting mercury content. The leaching of mercury from green tea during brewing is affected by various factors, but overall, the risk of mercury exposure from green tea intake is low, although high-risk areas should not be ignored.

Multi-residue analytical method development and risk assessment of 56 pesticides and their metabolites in tea by chromatography tandem mass spectroscopy

Yangliu Wu et al.

Summary: A modified QuEChERS method coupled to chromatography tandem mass spectroscopy was used to identify pesticides and metabolites residues in tea samples from China. The study found that there is unlikely a public health concern for Chinese consumers, but unauthorized and banned pesticides still pose potential risks to human health. Further attention is needed for the cumulative risk of residual pesticides and their metabolites on human health.

Occurrence of alkylphenols and alkylphenol ethoxylates in North Sea sediment samples collected across oil and gas fields

Diana E. K. McLaren et al.

Summary: This paper presents the occurrence of AP/APEs in marine sediment in North Sea oil and gas fields. The concentrations of octylphenol, nonylphenol and their ethoxylates near offshore installations were comparable to or higher than those of coastal and estuarine point source discharges, with higher concentrations reported in fields that came online prior to 1986.

Fast removal of phenolic compounds from water using hierarchical porous carbon nanofibers membrane

Shuangjun Zhou et al.

Summary: Water pollution, especially the direct emissions of phenolic compounds, poses a serious threat to human health. This study presents an integrated sample pre-treatment and derivatization method based on biopolymers/TEOS-based carbon nanofibers microextraction, allowing rapid extraction and detection of phenolic compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis.

Occurrences of eight common-used pesticide adjuvants in ten vegetable species and implications for dietary intake in North China

Duoduo Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the residues of eight common-used pesticide adjuvants in vegetables in North China from 2014 to 2016, finding that the residue levels of total PAs in vegetables from markets and farms were 500 and 661 mu g/kg, respectively. The highest residues of total PAs were found in cauliflowers and spinaches, with Tristyrylphenol ethoxylates dominating the concentrations in most vegetable species. As for human health risks, exposure to TPE and NP via vegetables for adults was deemed acceptable, while the estimated daily intakes of the other six PAs were unlikely to pose a threat to human health.

Laure Wiest et al.

Summary: A multi-family analytical strategy for quantifying surfactants in surface waters was developed, optimized, and validated, with the method suitable for monitoring low concentrations of surfactants. Anionic, cationic, and non-ionic surfactants were detected in French river water samples, with median concentrations ranging from 24 ng/L to 4.6 μg/L.
