The Use of Chitin from the Molts of Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) for the Removal of Anionic and Cationic Dyes from Aqueous Solutions

Tomasz Jozwiak et al.

Summary: This study investigates the possibility of using chitin from the molts of Tenebrio molitor to remove anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions. The results show that the sorption efficiency of chitin for anionic dyes is highest at pH 2-3, while for cationic dyes it is highest at pH 6. The maximum sorption capacity of chitin for anionic dyes is higher than some carbon-based materials.

Modified Shrimp-Based Chitosan as an Emerging Adsorbent Removing Heavy Metals (Chromium, Nickel, Arsenic, and Cobalt) from Polluted Water

Aminur Rahman et al.

Summary: In this report, the potential of chitosan, extracted from shrimp shells, as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal from water was investigated. The adsorption capacity of modified shrimp shell for heavy metals such as arsenic, nickel, cobalt, and chromium was measured and found to be high. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to analyze the adsorption process, and the results showed significant adsorption. Kinetic studies indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was suitable for describing the adsorption process. The presence of functional groups on the adsorbent was confirmed through FTIR analyses, and SEM-EDX analysis detected elements on the surface of modified shrimp shell chitosan. These findings suggest that modified shrimp shell chitosan has remarkable adsorption capacity and can be used as an eco-friendly and cost-effective adsorbent for the removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater.

Ionic Liquid-Based Green Emulsion Liquid Membrane for the Extraction of the Poorly Soluble Drug Ibuprofen

Huma Warsi Khan et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to identify the best ionic liquid (IL) for ibuprofen extraction. A total of 152 different cation-anion combinations were screened, and quaternary ammonium (cation) and sulfate (anion) were found to have better extraction ability for ibuprofen. Based on these results, an ionic liquid-based green emulsion liquid membrane (ILGELM) was developed, and the experimental results indicated that it was highly effective for the removal and recovery of ibuprofen.

Aluminum-based electrocoagulation for residual fluoride removal during per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) wastewater treatment

Mingkun Zhang et al.

Summary: The Al-based electrocoagulation (EC) technique was optimized to effectively remove the residual F- during PFASs wastewater treatment, achieving over 81.7% removal efficiency within 30 minutes under the optimal operating conditions. The EC showed stable performance in removing F- across a wide range of pH and could form stable flocs under neutral pH conditions. The in-depth characterization of flocs revealed the dynamic change of Al-F species along the EC process and the removal mechanisms were confirmed to involve complexation, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding, and precipitation. The optimized EC also demonstrated stable removal efficiency of F- in the presence of multiple PFASs.

Investigation of Efficient Adsorption of Toxic Heavy Metals (Chromium, Lead, Cadmium) from Aquatic Environment Using Orange Peel Cellulose as Adsorbent

Aminur Rahman et al.

Summary: In this study, orange peel cellulose (OPC) beads were used as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The adsorbent surface was analyzed using FT-IR and SEM-EDS. The concentrations of metals before and after adsorption were measured using ICP-MS. The maximum removal efficiency of metal ions occurred at pHs 4-8, and the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models confirmed the statistical significance of the adsorption processes.

Insights into the mechanism of fluoride adsorption over different crystal phase alumina surfaces

Chaohong Guan et al.

Summary: Activated alumina is the most common adsorbent for purifying fluoride in water, and in this study, the fluoride adsorption mechanisms on different crystal phase alumina surfaces were investigated using density functional theory. The results showed that theta-Al2O3 exhibited the highest reactivity for fluoride adsorption due to the high unsaturation level of aluminum atoms. Additionally, the bonding between fluoride and alumina surfaces was attributed to the hybridization between fluoride-p orbitals and aluminum-s,p orbitals.

Biosafety-inspired structural optimization of triazolium ionic liquids based on structure-toxicity relationships

Xiujiao Pan et al.

Summary: Research has found that the cytotoxicity of ionic liquids primarily depends on the cation, with longer hydrophobic sidechains in the cations leading to increased cell membrane perturbations and cytotoxicity. Shortening sidechain length and incorporating three nitrogen atoms can alleviate toxicity, providing important guiding principles for designing the next generation of green and safe ionic liquids.

The use of raw shrimp shells in the adsorption of highly polluted waters with Co2+

Gulden Gok et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of raw shrimp shell as an adsorbent to remove cobalt from aqueous environments. The results showed that the shrimp shell had a high removal efficiency and comparable adsorption capacity to other adsorbents studied. The surface structure of the shrimp shell was characterized, and equilibrium and kinetic models were used for analysis. The findings suggest that shrimp shell is an effective adsorbent for cobalt removal.
