Threonine Facilitates Cd Excretion by Increasing the Abundance of Gut Escherichia coli in Cd-Exposed Mice

Yongbin Li et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) pollution in the environment poses a threat to human health as it can easily enter the body through the food chain. Gut microbiota, specifically Escherichia coli, has the potential to reduce Cd-induced intestinal damage and promote Cd excretion. Threonine (Thr) has been found to effectively increase fecal Cd and enhance the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella genus and KF843036_g, leading to reduced Cd accumulation in the liver, kidney, and gut of Cd-exposed mice.

Di Zhao et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the levels of dietary cadmium intake in different countries, the global concentrations of cadmium in food reported in market basket and field surveys, and the associations between dietary cadmium intake and urinary cadmium levels in population-based studies. The review also proposes recommendations for preventing and reducing cadmium exposure through anthropogenic inputs and the food chain. It presents evidence for policy makers to protect humans from cadmium exposure and related health effects.

Role of Root Exudates in Cadmium Accumulation of a Low-Cadmium-Accumulating Tobacco Line (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Huagang Huang et al.

Summary: Root exudates are closely linked to cadmium (Cd) uptake and plant Cd accumulation. In this hydroponic experiment, the role of root exudates in Cd accumulation was explored in a low-Cd-accumulating tobacco line (RG11) compared to a high-Cd-accumulating tobacco line (Yuyan5). Both tobacco lines showed increased secretion of organic acids and amino acids in response to exogenous Cd addition, but RG11 secreted lower levels of organic acids and different compositions compared to Yuyan5. The role of these root exudates in Cd uptake varied between the two tobacco lines and further research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying low Cd translocation to the leaf, which contributes to the security of tobacco leaf.

Intercropping with herbs minimizes cadmium availability through altering physicochemical dynamics and metabolite profiles in wheat rhizosphere

Lei Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of intercropping wheat with herbaceous plants on soil Cd availability and rhizosphere metabolites. The results showed that herbaceous plants in the intercropping system increased wheat biomass and reduced Cd accumulation in wheat grains. The increased pH and cation exchange capacity in soil contributed to the decreased Cd availability, while up-regulation of fatty acid metabolism allowed wheat plants to maintain a normal intracellular environment under stress conditions. Furthermore, up-regulation of saccharide and amino acid metabolism inhibited the migration of soil Cd into wheat tissue by increasing wheat biomass and Cd-binding proteins.

Comparative evaluation on the effects of dietary docosahexaenoic acid on growth performance, fatty acid profile and lipid metabolism in two sizes of abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different levels of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on growth performance, fatty acid profile, and lipid metabolism in abalone were compared. The optimal dietary DHA content for large and small abalone was estimated to be 1.32% and 0.88%, respectively, based on weight gain rate (WGR). DHA supplementation increased digestive enzymes' activity, polyunsaturated fatty acids content, and n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio in abalone.

Cadmium accelerates bacterial oleic acid production to promote fat accumulation in Caenorhabditis elegans

Xueqi Ma et al.

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to cadmium induces fat accumulation in nematodes, a process mediated by live bacteria. Cadmium perturbs metabolites in bacteria, notably oleic acid, leading to increased fat deposition in nematodes regardless of the cultivated system. Additionally, Vitamin D3 showed significant potential in preventing cadmium- or oleic acid-induced fat storage.

Oleic Acid Facilitates Cd Excretion by Increasing the Abundance of Burkholderia in Cd-Exposed Mice

Zhijia Fang et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of different fatty acids on cadmium accumulation and toxicity in mice. It found that oleic acid was the most effective in facilitating cadmium excretion. The gut microbiota, particularly Burkholderia genus, played a crucial role in this process. The study also identified the mechanisms by which Burkholderia cepacia, a species in the genus, exhibited strong tolerance to cadmium and adsorbed it on its surface through the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances.
