The author provides an overview of the research history on the main issues discussed in the paper, and highlights their personal involvement in the research. XDH, responsible for purine degradation, is found in various organisms, while conversion to XO only occurs in mammals. This study elucidates the molecular mechanism of this conversion and presents its physiological and pathological significance.
