Screening and quantification of 146 veterinary drug residues in beef and chicken using QuEChERS combined with high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole orbitrap mass spectrometry

Hong Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an integrated high-throughput screening and quantification method for multi-class veterinary drug residues using HPLC-Q-Orbitrap mass spectrometry. A qualitative screening mass database of 171 veterinary drugs was created, improving the accuracy and scope of screening. The developed quantification method for 146 veterinary drug residues showed good linearity, with correlation coefficients of 0.9921-0.9994. The proposed method demonstrated reliability for the simultaneous analysis of multi-class veterinary drugs and is of significance in expanding the screening scope and improving quantitative analysis efficiency.

Potential and limitation of retrospective HRMS based data analysis: ?Have meat-producing animals been exposed to illegal growth promotors such as SARMs??

A. Kaufmann et al.

Summary: Targeted strategies using gas or liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass analyzers are widely used in food safety control laboratories. However, with the emergence of new chemical hazards, the target list needs to be updated, requiring the reanalysis of samples. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) provides an alternative approach by allowing the analysis of samples without a predefined target list, thus enhancing laboratory efficiency and throughput.

Use of high-resolution mass spectrometry for veterinary drug multi-residue analysis

Esmer Jongedijk et al.

Summary: This article reviews the applicability of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) techniques for the analysis of veterinary medicinal products and hormones in food. Different measurement and data evaluation strategies are discussed, and it suggests that the implementation of HRMS can enable a shift from predefined scope methods to real risk-based monitoring for routine food and feed analysis.

Antimicrobial resistance genes and plasmids in Campylobacter jejuni from broiler production chain in Southern Brazil

Natalie Rauber Kleinubing et al.

Summary: The study found that in the broiler production chain in Southern Brazil, 82.2% of Campylobacter jejuni isolates showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial, with 46.4% being multidrug resistant. Among the resistant isolates, 91.3% had genes encoding multidrug efflux pumps, 81.2% of tetracycline-resistant isolates had the tet(O) gene, and all kanamycin-resistant isolates had the aphA-3 gene. Furthermore, 66.7% of ampicillin-resistant isolates had the bla(oxa-61) gene. This highlights the importance of prudent use of antimicrobial agents in animal production in Brazil to combat antimicrobial resistance.
