Electronic structure of NdNiO2 superconductor from ab initio calculations

Soukaina El-Moudny et al.

Summary: By employing first-principles density functional theory calculations, it is found that the electron-phonon coupling in the undoped infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO2 is weak, indicating that the conventional BCS theory cannot explain the observed superconductivity. Furthermore, electronic band calculations reveal the existence of another conduction band crossing the Fermi level, composed mainly of orbitals from the rare-earth element Nd and an interstitial s-like orbital. The interaction between Nd and Ni orbitals at the Fermi level leads to self-doping of holes from the Nd band into the Ni orbitals.

Multiband d - p model and the electronic structure of quasi-two dimensional Nd1-xSrxNiO2

Krzysztof Rosciszewski et al.

Summary: The study reveals different electronic structures and competitive magnetic ground states in the NiO2 planes of novel superconductors, consistent with experimental and theoretical data. However, a two-dimensional model with only p and d orbitals may not be sufficient for a realistic description of Nd1-xSrxNiO2.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

Yusuke Nomura et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite layer nickelates RNiO2 is intriguing, as they are isostructural to doped (Ca, Sr)CuO2 which exhibit superconductivity at about 110 K. Investigating the similarities and differences between these oxides will provide new insights into the mechanism of high Tc superconductivity in correlated electron systems. This paper reviews experimental and theoretical works on the new superconductor and discusses future prospects for the 'nickel age' of superconductivity.

Intrinsic magnetism in superconducting infinite-layer nickelates

Jennifer Fowlie et al.

Summary: Muon spin rotation/relaxation studies have revealed the coexistence of intrinsic magnetic ground state and superconductivity in superconducting infinite-layer nickelates, regardless of rare earth ion or doping. This magnetism, likely to be antiferromagnetic and short-range ordered, is qualitatively distinct from doped cuprates and resembles that of some iron pnictides and heavy fermion compounds.

Antiferromagnetic fluctuations and dominant dxy-wave pairing symmetry in nickelate-based superconductors

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: Motivated by recent experiments on superconductivity in nickelate-based materials, this study investigates the temperature dependence of the spin correlation and superconducting pairing interaction using a two-band Hubbard model and quantum Monte Carlo method. The results show that dxy-wave symmetry pairing dominates at low temperatures, driven by strong electron-electron correlation. Additionally, there is no evidence for long-range antiferromagnetic order in nickelate-based superconductors, suggesting that pure electron correlation may not account for the observed charge density wave state.

Doping-dependent character and possible magnetic ordering of NdNiO2

Frank Lechermann

Summary: Nickelate superconductors of infinite-layer type exhibit challenging electronic properties with doping, leading to rich physics. The superconducting hole-doped region serves as the meeting point of a (self-)doped Mott insulator and a bad Hund metal. The Fermi-level crossing of the Ni-dz(2) flat-band creates a singular arena for unconventional superconductivity.

H. Lu et al.

Summary: The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates brings us closer to a material class similar to cuprate superconductors. Measurements of magnetic excitations in these nickelates showed that undoped NdNiO2 possesses a branch of dispersive excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 milli-electron volts.

Doping dependence of electronic structure of infinite-layer NdNiO2

Zhao Liu et al.

Summary: The electronic structure of the nickelate superconductor NdNiO2 is studied upon hole doping, revealing strong intrinsic hybridization between strongly correlated states and itinerant electrons, forming a valence-fluctuating correlated metal. Hund's rule plays a dominant role in the lightly doped compound, with intricate effects on Ni-3d orbitals. Hole doping leads to nonmonotonic changes in electron occupation and flipping orbital configurations in the overdoped regime. These findings provide insights into electron pairing and superconductivity.
