Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: Secondary mineralization is a promising method for remediating cadmium pollution in sediments. Phosphate can enhance the formation of stable secondary minerals and provide a new direction for Cd immobilization. The established syntrophic system of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) is a prospective bioremediation technology for Cd immobilization in sediments.

Effects of Calcium on Arsenate Adsorption and Arsenate/Iron Bioreduction of Ferrihydrite in Stimulated Groundwater

Mengna Chen et al.

Summary: The presence of calcium ions has a significant impact on the migration and release of arsenic in arsenic-bearing ferrihydrite mediated by arsenate-iron reducing bacteria. Adsorbed calcium can cause additional release of arsenic in the early stage and inhibit the accumulation of biogenic ferrous ions, which is not conducive to the immobilization of arsenic in groundwater.

The effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron-loaded N-doped biochar on the generation of free radicals and nonradicals by peroxydisulfate activation

Jiaqi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of catalysts with different N-doping levels were prepared to investigate the roles of N-doping in nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)-based catalysts for persulfate (PDS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The results showed that the synergy between nZVI and N-doped biochar (NBC) improved the catalytic ability and generated more active species during PDS activation. Radical pathways (HO· and SO4·-) and nonradical pathway (O-1(2)) were proposed as the main mechanisms. N-doped biochar provided graphitic N, pyridinic N, and C=O species for O-1(2) generation. Moreover, nZVI@NBC demonstrated excellent anti-interference capacity and stability. The analysis of BPA degradation intermediates confirmed the involvement of HO·, SO4·-, and (1)O(2) in the reaction of nZVI@NBC system. This research provides a new perspective on the synergistic effect of nZVI and N-doped materials in AOPs for endocrine disrupter degradation.

Summary: Stalk Biochar (SBC) and Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) were coupled using biosynthesis method to form SBCnZVI composite material, which showed synergistic effect on improving catalytic activity. SBC enhanced the dispersibility of nZVI and protected it from oxidation, while nZVI had better catalytic activity. The composite material exhibited good reusability and applicability for different types of dyes.

Biochar and biochar-polylactic acid composite enhance biodegradation of hexachlorobenzene in soil by altering microbial community

Jianling Fan et al.

Summary: Exploring the mechanisms of accelerated degradation of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in soil is scientifically and practically important. However, the relationship between microbial community composition and structure and anaerobic reductive dechlorination in paddy soils is still unclear. This study investigated the impacts of biochar and biochar-polylactic acid composite addition on soil prokaryotic community diversity, composition, and structure, as well as their contributions to HCB anaerobic dechlorination. The results showed that both biochar and biochar-polylactic acid composite addition could promote HCB dechlorination in paddy soils, with biochar-polylactic acid composite amendment having a remarkable effect on soil prokaryotic community diversity. Furthermore, specific bacterial genera and microbial community diversity were found to be the important predictors of HCB dechlorination for biochar and biochar-polylactic acid composite addition, respectively.

Fate and mechanistic insights into nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) activation of sludge derived biochar reacted with Cr(VI)

Xuyin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the removal of heavy metals using nanoscale zero-valent iron modified biochar (nZVI-BC) and the interaction between nZVI corrosion products and heavy metals. The results show that nZVI-BC follows the Langmuir isotherm for Cr(VI) adsorption, and the main removal mechanism is the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The corrosion of nZVI-BC is influenced by pH, with different iron oxide products formed at different pH levels. DFT calculations reveal that Fe3O4 has higher adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) under acidic conditions, and it effectively removes Cr(VI) through electrostatic attraction and reduction. However, Fe3O4 continues to convert to more stable FeOOH, which stabilizes the reduced Cr(III).

Influence mechanism of filling ratio on solid-phase denitrification with polycaprolactone as biofilm carrier

Xin He et al.

Summary: This study constructed three up-flow fixed-bed bioreactors with different filling ratios of polycaprolactone (PCL) and found that a low filling ratio favored microbial attachment and growth, while a high influent nitrate load promoted the presence of nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase. Therefore, reducing the filling ratio or increasing the hydraulic retention time (HRT) may be effective measures to save costs for nitrate removal.
