Selective Pd recovery from acidic leachates by 3-mercaptopropylphosphonic acid grafted TiO2: does surface coverage correlate to performance?

Summary: Modification of metal oxides with organophosphonic acids (PAs) allows for control and customization of surface properties. In this study, different metal sorbent materials with varying thiol surface coverages were designed using aqueous-based grafting of 3-mercaptopropylphosphonic acid (3MPPA) on mesoporous TiO2. Surface grafted thiol groups were successfully obtained and their properties were correlated to Pd adsorption performance. The results showed high Pd/S adsorption efficiencies and a significant difference in selectivity towards Pd removal from a spend automotive catalyst leachate.

Summary: In this study, Zr/CrO2 nanocomposite-based photocatalysts with different compositions were prepared by an environmentally friendly method. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was concentration-dependent, increasing with higher amounts of dopant up to a certain point before decreasing efficiency due to recombination of photoexcited charges.
