Polyunsaturated fatty acids and fatty acid-derived lipid mediators: Recent advances in the understanding of their biosynthesis, structures, and functions

Simon C. Dyall et al.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids are important components of cell membranes and play a role in cellular function. They can also serve as precursors for lipid mediators called oxylipins. Oxylipins are formed through enzymatic or non-enzymatic pathways and include eicosanoids and other lipid mediators. This review summarizes current knowledge about the structure and functions of nonclassical oxylipins.

A dose-response study with omega-3 rich canola oil as a novel source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in feed for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in seawater; effects on performance, tissue fatty acid composition, and fillet quality

Bente Ruyter et al.

Summary: Long-chain omega-3 rich oils from genetically modified crops are a promising source of DHA in Atlantic salmon diets. This study found that replacing conventional canola oil with DHA canola oil did not affect the growth, survival, or lipid digestion of the salmon. The fatty acid composition of the fish tissues was influenced by the different diets, with higher levels of DHA resulting in improved fillet quality.

Elucidating the structure and functions of Resolvin D6 isomers on nerve regeneration with a distinctive trigeminal transcriptome

Thang L. Pham et al.

Summary: Innervation is crucial for maintaining cornea integrity. The combination of PEDF and DHA can stimulate the synthesis of a new stereoisomer of RvD6si, which promotes nerve regeneration. RR-RvD6 is more potent than SR-RvD6 in increasing cornea sensitivity and nerve regeneration, indicating a novel function of this lipid mediator in maintaining cornea integrity and homeostasis after injury.

μSPE followed by HPLC-MS/MS for the determination of series D and E resolvins in biological matrices

Federico Fanti et al.

Summary: The critical role of acute inflammatory processes lies in a new group of pro-resolving lipid mediators, including lipoxins, resolvins, protectins and maresins; a proposed analytical protocol for extracting and quantifying multiple resolvins from different matrices showed good precision and accuracy, with a combination of Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) and micro-Solid Phase Extraction (mu SPE) leading to high sensitivity and enrichment factor without affecting accuracy and precision.
