Optimization of the use of cellulolytic enzyme preparation for the extraction of health promoting anthocyanins from black carrot using response surface methodology

Manoj Kumar et al.

Summary: The optimized extraction of anthocyanins from black carrots using Viscozyme results in superior quality extracts with high phenolic content and low degradation parameters. This makes it a promising candidate for replacing the red color in processed foods.

Composition and antifungal activity of the essential oils hydrodistilled from three accessions of pastinocello carrot (Daucus carota L. ssp. major)

Luciana G. G. Angelini et al.

Summary: In line with the increasing demand for sustainable agriculture and food systems, the use of natural products like essential oils as alternatives to pesticides has gained attention. This study focused on investigating the bio-agronomic characteristics, essential oils yield and composition, and the activity against plant pathogenic and beneficial fungi of the pastinocello variety of Daucus carota. Results showed significant differences among pastinocello accessions in terms of morphology, productivity, and essential oil composition. The essential oil from accession L24 exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect against plant pathogenic fungi, while no effect was observed against beneficial isolates of Trichoderma genus. These findings suggest the potential use of pastinocello essential oils for the control of plant diseases, either alone or in combination with beneficial Trichoderma isolates.

Are Organic Certified Carrots Richer in Health-Promoting Phenolics and Carotenoids than the Conventionally Grown Ones?

Dominika Srednicka-Tober et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the concentrations of polyphenols and carotenoids in organic and non-organic carrots. The study found that conventionally cultivated carrots had higher concentrations of these compounds compared to organically grown ones. There was also variation in the polyphenol concentrations in carrot roots. The impact of production systems and cultivars on the levels of these bioactive compounds was inconsistent.

The Role of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) in Autoimmune Disease and Current TNF-α Inhibitors in Therapeutics

Dan-in Jang et al.

Summary: TNF-α was originally identified as a factor causing tumor necrosis but has also been recognized as a pathological component of autoimmune diseases. Its signaling pathways play important roles in cellular responses, and inappropriate activation can lead to chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases. TNF-α inhibitors have been developed as effective therapeutic tools for various autoimmune diseases.

Investigation of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin and quercetin

Chunlian Tian et al.

Summary: The study focused on the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of four common flavonol glycoside compounds - luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin, and quercetin. Results showed that all compounds were able to reduce NO concentration and phagocytosis, with quercetin showing the most potential as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. Furthermore, the research indicated a correlation between antioxidant activity and the number of phenolic hydroxyl groups, and compounds with enol groups displayed superior activities, suggesting potential for future in vivo experiments.

Antioxidant Activity and Bio-Accessibility of Polyphenols in Black Carrot (Daucus carota L. ssp. sativus var. atrorubens Alef.) and Two Derived Products during Simulated Gastrointestinal Digestion and Colonic Fermentation

Gema Pereira-Caro et al.

Summary: Black carrot and its derived products have high polyphenol content, with the main polyphenols remaining bio-accessible after in vitro digestion, but undergoing degradation during colonic fermentation. The results suggest that the black carrot matrix significantly affects the bio-accessibility of polyphenols and, therefore, their potential health benefits.

Luteolin and its derivative apigenin suppress the inducible PD-L1 expression to improve anti-tumor immunity in KRAS-mutant lung cancer

Ze-Bo Jiang et al.

Summary: The study showed that luteolin and apigenin can effectively inhibit the proliferation of KRAS-mutant lung cancer cells, reduce the expression of IFN-gamma-induced PD-L1, and induce apoptosis by suppressing STAT3 phosphorylation. Combined treatment with PD-1 blockade and apigenin/luteolin had a synergistic effect, offering a potential therapeutic strategy for NSCLC with KRAS mutations.
