Amphiphilic nonionic block and gradient copoly(2-oxazoline)s based on 2-methyl-2-oxazoline and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline as efficient stabilizers for the formulation of tailor-made emulsions

Valentin Bardoula et al.

Summary: Hypothesis: Poly(2-alkyl/aryl-oxazoline)s (PAOx) have gained renewed interest in the new millennium due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, and higher tunability compared to poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEG)s. It was hypothesized that amphiphilic PAOx could stabilize oil/water (O/W) interfaces and form tunable emulsions. The study focused on the ability of spontaneously formed amphiphilic gradient copolymers to stabilize O/W emulsions. Experiments: Amphiphilic block and gradient copolymers based on 2-methyl-2-oxazoline and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline were prepared with varying hydrophilic/lipophilic balance, degree of polymerization, and monomer distribution. Systematic characterization of the emulsions was conducted through granulometry, stability, and rheology studies. Findings: Stable O/W emulsions were obtained with only 0.5 wt% of copolymers. The emulsions stabilized by the most hydrophilic copolymers allowed for texture adjustment, increased concentration, and oil content. Importantly, emulsion properties of gradient copolymers showed similar behavior to their block counterparts, offering easy access to new biocompatible emulsifiers as the gradient copolymers were spontaneously formed through statistical copolymerization.

Surfactants/citric acid catalyzed hydrothermal carbonization of pomelo peel for solid fuels: Conversion mechanism and combustion performance

Ru Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic effects of different surfactants on the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of pomelo peel. It was found that Span 80 and Tween 80 could significantly enhance the solid yield and heating value of the hydrochar. Co-firing the surfactant-catalyzed hydrochar with coal improved its combustibility and reduced the activation energy.

Synergism for lowering interfacial tensions between betaines and extended surfactants: The role of self-regulating molecular size

Qun Zhang et al.

Summary: The synergistic effects of betaines and anionic extended surfactants with self-regulating ability in reducing interfacial tensions (IFTs) have been validated through experiments and molecular dynamics simulation. The IFTs of different combinations of betaines and alkyl polypropylene ether sulfonates (APS) in solutions against decane and crude oil were investigated. The results show that the IFTs decrease with the increase of propylene oxide (PO) numbers in APS surfactants and the determining factor for IFT reduction in the mixed systems is size compatibility. The flexible PO group in APS surfactants enables them to exhibit synergistic effects with different betaines. The findings contribute to the understanding of mixed surfactant solutions in enhanced oil recovery.

The Synergistic Effects between Sulfobetaine and Hydrophobically Modified Polyacrylamide on Properties Related to Enhanced Oil Recovery

Qi Sun et al.

Summary: This paper studied the influences of different surfactants on the viscosity of two polymers, HPAM and HMPAM, and conducted experiments in different reservoir environments. The results showed that surfactants acted as electrolytes to reduce the viscosity of HPAM, while they formed aggregates with the hydrophobic blocks of HMPAM molecules, reducing the bulk viscosity. However, zwitterionic surfactant BSB was able to build bridges between different polymer molecules through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, resulting in an increase in viscosity.

Adsorption of extended anionic surfactants at the water-polymethylmethacrylate interface: The effect of polyoxyethylene groups

Xing-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: The wettability of solid surfaces can be altered by extended surfactants with different EO numbers. Below the CMC, extended surfactants adsorb at the PMMA-liquid interface through polar interactions, increasing the surface tension. Above the CMC, extended surfactants continue to adsorb at the PMMA-liquid interface, leading to a hydrophilic modification of the PMMA surface.

Effect of bivalent cations on the interfacial tensions of extended anionic surfactant solutions

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of extended surfactant concentration, polypropylene oxide (PO) number, and various counter ions (Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) on the oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) of extended surfactant solutions. The results show that as the PO number increases, the space occupied by surfactant molecules on the oil phase side increases, resulting in a tighter surfactant film. Bivalent cations can significantly reduce the IFT, with calcium ions achieving ultralow values at lower PO numbers and a wide range of alkane concentrations. The ability of magnesium ions to reduce the IFT is weaker than that of calcium ions. Additionally, surface-active substances in crude oil competitively adsorb on the interface, leading to an increase in IFT. The addition of calcium or magnesium ions forms a tight adsorption film of surfactant molecules, resulting in an ultralow IFT against crude oil.

Solubilization of Aldehydes and Amines in Aqueous CiEj Surfactant Aggregates: Solubilization Capacity and Aggregate Properties

Peter Kroll et al.

Summary: Hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes and subsequent reductive amination of aldehydes to amines can be carried out in an aqueous system using a water-soluble catalyst. However, the solubility of long-chain molecules in water limits the reactions to short-chain molecules. By adding surfactants to the aqueous phase, the solubility of long-chain aldehydes and amines can be increased. This study investigates the solubilization capacity of different nonionic CiEj surfactants towards long-chain aldehydes and amines, as well as the resulting changes in aggregate structure. The findings provide valuable insights for the development of suitable surfactants as green solvents for hydroformylation and reductive amination reactions.

Dilational Rheological Properties of Surfactants at the Crude Oil-Water Interface: The Effect of Branch-Preformed Particle Gels and Polymers

Fang-Jian Zhao et al.

Summary: The interfacial properties of a heterogeneous composite flooding system were investigated. The results showed that the molecules in the system could form an elastic interfacial film at the crude oil-water interface. The addition of polymer had a detrimental effect on the interfacial film, while the addition of particle gel disrupted the stability and strength of the film. Linear polymer had a stronger ability to destroy the interfacial film than the particle gel, and their combination resulted in even more severe disruption. The heterogeneous composite flooding system not only increased oil recovery by increasing bulk phase viscosity but also facilitated post-treatment of the recovered crude oil.

The mechanism for lowering interfacial tension by extended surfactant containing ethylene oxide and propylene oxide groups

Zhong-Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the interfacial tensions (IFTs) between a series of alkyl ether carboxylates with different ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) groups and n-alkanes were investigated. The results show that the PO group of the adsorbed surfactant molecules extends towards the oil phase in a helical winding manner, while the EO group arranges in an L pattern at the interface. Surfactant molecules with a large ionic head and PO group exhibit high IFT values, while those with sufficient PO and fewer EO groups have lower IFT values. The addition of NaCl can decrease the size of the ionic head and the C12PO15EO5C solution at optimized salinity can achieve ultralow IFT with hydrocarbons. However, electrolytes have little effect on the IFTs of surfactants with a dumbbell conformation at the interface, as the size of the linear EO group plays a crucial role.
