Photophysical, photobiological, and biomolecule-binding properties of new tri-cationic meso-tri(2-thienyl)corroles with Pt(II) and Pd(II) polypyridyl derivatives

Bruna M. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study synthesized and characterized new tri-cationic corrole derivatives that contained Pt(II) or Pd(II) complexes attached at the peripheral position of thienyl moieties. The corrole derivatives were characterized through various analysis techniques. Photophysical and theoretical calculations were used to investigate the singlet and triplet excited states, and spectroscopic techniques were used to evaluate the photobiological parameters. The binding capacity of the corrole derivatives with nucleic acids and human serum albumin was determined, and their potential for application in photodynamic therapeutic processes was studied.

Bio-Inspired Drug Delivery Systems: From Synthetic Polypeptide Vesicles to Outer Membrane Vesicles

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Nanomedicine focuses on developing nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery. Synthetic polypeptides, composed of repeating amino acid units, can form polypeptide vesicles under suitable conditions. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), originating from Gram-negative bacteria, are spherical buds filled with periplasmic content. PVs and OMVs, due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility, have been utilized as drug carriers. In this review, we discuss recent drug delivery research based on PVs and OMVs, including production methods, vesicle design, and biological assessment, as well as future challenges.

Synthesis, Chemical-Physical Characterization, and Biomedical Applications of Functional Gold Nanoparticles: A Review

Ileana Ielo et al.

Summary: Gold nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability and biocompatibility, making them ideal candidates for medical and biological applications. Various synthetic methods, such as Turkevich synthesis, reduction with NaBH4, seeding growth, ascorbic acid-based, green synthesis, and Brust-Schiffrin methods, have been used to enhance their stability and features. Functionalization of the AuNP surface has led to the formation of self-assembled monolayers using polymer coatings as capping agents bonded to the nanoparticles. Common chemical-physical characterization techniques are used to determine the size, shape, and surface coverage of AuNPs for their biomedical and biotechnology applications.
