Mycelial growth of Inonotus obliquus on malt extract media and on wood of different host species

Kalev Adamson et al.

Summary: Interest in cultivating mushrooms, such as Chaga, has grown, so 38 strains of Inonotus obliquus were isolated from conks in Estonia and Finland. These strains showed different growth rates on Malt Extract Agar (MEA) and various wood substrates. The fastest-growing strains were determined at different temperatures, with PAT21061 showing the highest growth rate at 9 degrees C, PAT22871 at 18 degrees C, and PAT21058 at 22 degrees C. The host species origin did not correlate to the growth rate characteristics of I. obliquus.

Hypsizygus marmoreus as a Source of Indole Compounds and Other Bioactive Substances with Health-Promoting Activities

Katarzyna Kala et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the chemical composition of Hypsizygus marmoreus fruiting bodies, mycelium, and in vitro cultures, and found that H. marmoreus mycelium is a good source of indole compounds, bioelements, glucans, and lovastatin. In vitro cultures enriched with zinc and magnesium salts showed increased levels of certain compounds, including 5-methyltryptamine, melatonin, protocatechuic acid, sterols, and total glucans.

Comparative Analyses of Bioactive Compounds in Inonotus obliquus Conks Growing on Alnus and Betula

Rein Drenkhan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the content of bioactive compounds in the conks of Inonotus obliquus on different host tree species and found that both Alnus incana and Betula pendula can serve as hosts for I. obliquus. The conks from Alnus incana had higher levels of betulinic acid, while the conks from Betula pendula had higher levels of total polyphenols, flavonols, and glucans. The content of inotodiol and lanosterol showed no significant differences between the two tree species. This study highlights the potential economic value of cultivating I. obliquus on Alnus species in forestry.

Pleurotus spp. Mycelia Enriched in Magnesium and Zinc Salts as a Potential Functional Food

Anna Wlodarczyk et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the effect of supplementing culture media with inorganic Mg and Zn salts on Pleurotus mushrooms. The results showed that adding Zn and Mg salts increased biomass production and the bioaccumulation of inorganic salts. Maintaining in vitro cultures under optimized conditions resulted in mycelium with better composition and health properties, potentially classified as functional foods.

Recent Developments in Inonotus obliquus (Chaga mushroom) Polysaccharides: Isolation, Structural Characteristics, Biological Activities and Application

Yangpeng Lu et al.

Summary: Inonotus obliquus, commonly known as Chaga mushroom, is widely used as a medicinal and health food in various countries. Its polysaccharide component, IOPS, is believed to possess significant bioactive properties such as anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-viral, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic activities. Research on the extraction, purification, structural characteristics, and biological activities of IOPS has advanced, with potential applications for the treatment of cancers and type 2 diabetes. New perspectives for future work on IOPS have also been proposed.

Stimulatory Effects of Oleci Acid and Fungal Elicitor on Betulinic Acid Production by Submerged Cultivation of Medicinal Mushroom Inonotus obliquus

Hanghang Lou et al.

Summary: The novel strategy of using oleic acid and fungal elicitor (made from Aspergillus niger) to stimulate betulinic acid biosynthesis in medicinal mushroom Inonotus obliquus was evaluated in this study. Results showed that both oleic acid and fungal elicitor were effective stimulators, with oleic acid leading to a 2-fold increase in betulinic acid production and fungal elicitor significantly enhancing mycelia growth and intracellular betulinic acid accumulation. Additionally, the combination of oleic acid and fungal elicitor up-regulated key genes expression related to betulinic acid biosynthesis.

Determining the amount of potentially bioavailable phenolic compounds and bioelements in edible mushroom mycelia of Agaricus bisporus, Cantharellus cibarius, and Lentinula edodes

Katarzyna Kala et al.

Summary: This study examined the release of bioelements and phenolic compounds from edible mushrooms enriched with zinc, selenium, and L-phenylalanine, both individually and in combination, through a simulated human gastrointestinal digestion method. The results indicated that mycelium of Lentinula edodes showed the best health-promoting properties, with significant increases in the synthesis of p-hydroxybenzoic and protocatechuic acid when a mixture was added. Additionally, enriched Agaricus bisporus mycelium had the highest extraction amounts of selenium and zinc.

Inoculation success of Inonotus obliquus in living birch (Betula spp.)

Jari Miina et al.

Summary: This study examined the success rate of inoculating I. obliquus fungus on birch trees under different conditions, finding that factors such as sunny location, mineral soil, small tree diameter, and early inoculation in the thermal growing season were key to success. Despite successful inoculation, the formation of conks was found to be a slow process.

Chaga mushroom extract induces autophagy via the AMPK-mTOR signaling pathway in breast cancer cells

Min-Gu Lee et al.

Summary: Chaga mushroom extract inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells by inducing autophagy through activating AMPK and inhibiting the mTOR signaling pathway. In addition, it effectively suppresses tumor growth in mice, with inotodiol and trametenolic acid identified as the major constituents responsible for its cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cells.
