Photoinactivation of Phage Phi6 as a SARS-CoV-2 Model in Wastewater: Evidence of Efficacy and Safety

Marta Gomes et al.

Summary: This study used bacteriophage phi 6 as a model for SARS-CoV-2 to investigate the viability of the virus in wastewater and the efficiency of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) in disinfecting the virus. The results showed that phi 6 remained viable in different environmental conditions for a considerable period and PDI proved to be an efficient and safe method for wastewater disinfection.

Where Electrostatics Matter: Bacterial Surface Neutralization and Membrane Disruption by Antimicrobial Peptides SAAP-148 and OP-145

Djenana Vejzovic et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effective alternative treatments for multi-drug-resistant bacteria. Their mechanism of disrupting bacterial membrane function is broad and not related to antimicrobial resistance. The positive charge of AMPs is crucial for their interaction with bacterial membranes. Electrostatic forces play a more important role in actions on the surface of Gram-negative bacteria than on their cytoplasmic membranes.

Cationic porphyrin-based nanoparticles for photodynamic inactivation and identification of bacteria strains

Lin Li et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic drug resistance has led to the development of alternative strategies such as antibacterial photodynamic therapy (APDT). In this study, cationic porphyrin-based nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and shown to have intrinsic antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria. These NPs also exhibited good hemocompatibility and low cytotoxicity.

Comprehensive review of photophysical parameters (ε, Φf, τs) of tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP) and zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) - Critical benchmark molecules in photochemistry and photosynthesis

Masahiko Taniguchi et al.

Summary: Tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP) and zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) are widely used benchmark molecules with rich visible-region spectra and broad structural analogy to chlorophylls, but there is a significant variability in literature values for key photophysical parameters. A comprehensive review of 871 publications from 1940 to September 2020 found that the choice of values for parameters such as molar absorption coefficient, fluorescence quantum yield, and singlet excited-state lifetime can have far-reaching consequences in photochemistry applications. Different instrumentation and sources of error contribute to the wide range of reported values for these parameters.

The simultaneous role of porphyrins' H- and J- aggregates and host-guest chemistry on the fabrication of reversible Dextran-PMMA polymersome

Seyed Milad Safar Sajadi et al.

Summary: Utilizing amphiphilic copolymers to control the aggregation of porphyrin molecules optimized the efficacy of photodynamic therapy. The self-assembly of amphiphilic copolymers into polymersomes allowed for reversible structural changes under light stimulus, enabling encapsulation and release of hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules.

Antimicrobial Photodynamic Approach in the Inactivation of Viruses in Wastewater: Influence of Alternative Adjuvants

Maria Bartolomeu et al.

Summary: Pathogenic viruses are commonly found in marine and estuarine waters due to inadequate wastewater treatment, affecting water quality and human health. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy shows promise as a disinfection method without generating toxic by-products. By using different photosensitizers and adjuvants in wastewater, viruses can be effectively controlled, reducing treatment time.
