Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Austin M. Evans et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemists have developed various methods to synthesize molecules, polymers, and networks, but have long lacked the ability to prepare two-dimensional polymers from designed monomers. Recent advances in polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged, producing 2DPs as either monolayers or multilayer assemblies.

Photoreactive Crystals Exhibiting [2+2] Photocycloaddition Reaction and Dynamic Effects

Bibhuti Bhusan Rath et al.

Summary: Conducting reactions in the solid state without solvents allows for structural characterization through single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Single-crystal to single-crystal reactions are commonly observed in [2+2] cycloaddition reactions, and the principles of crystal engineering can be applied to achieve desired reactivities and physical properties. Photoreactions in the solid state exhibit regio- and stereospecificity and yield quantitative photoproducts. Dynamic crystals that undergo mechanical responses to light or heat energy have emerged as smart actuating materials.

Polyamide Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Molecular Sieving

Ya Lu et al.

Summary: This article reports a new type of polyamide membranes fabricated from amide-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which have well-ordered pore structures. These membranes exhibit high permeability and rejection rate to organic dyes, as well as excellent stability under harsh conditions. The comparison with other membranes highlights the advantages of polyamide COF membranes in terms of mechanical property, stability, and separation performance, making them a promising material for high-performance separation membranes.

Optimal acceleration voltage for near-atomic resolution imaging of layer-stacked 2D polymer thin films

Baokun Liang et al.

Summary: This paper presents the challenge of high-resolution imaging of organic 2D materials using transmission electron microscopes, and demonstrates the reduction of resolution gap between achievable resolution and instrumental limit by selecting the appropriate incident electron energy. The authors find that the highest resolution of 1.9 angstrom is achieved at 120 kV, and successfully detect interstitial defects and functional groups in 2D polymer thin films.

Donor-Acceptor Interactions Induced Interfacial Synthesis of an Ultrathin Fluoric 2D Polymer by Photochemical [2+2] Cycloaddition

Qingzhu Sun et al.

Summary: The study reports a method for preparing ultrathin 2D polymer films based on photo-triggered [2+2] cycloaddition at the air/water interface. The pre-assembly process induced by D-A interactions before polymerization plays a key role in constructing the highly ordered structure. The precise structure and chemical compositions of the continuous 2D polymer films were proven by selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS), and molecular-mechanics-based structural simulation.

Covalent triazine frameworks composite membrane (CdS/CTF-1) with enhanced photocatalytic in-situ cleaning and disinfection properties for sustainable separation

Guiliang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel [0D + 2D] composite membrane was developed by combining covalent triazine frameworks (CTF-1) nanosheets with built-in CdS quantum dots (QDs) to address membrane fouling issues. The composite membrane exhibited high water flux and dye rejection, while the built-in [0D + 2D]-heterojunction significantly improved photocatalytic cleaning and disinfection performance, enabling high permeability regeneration. This work provides a prospective strategy to resolve membrane fouling issues and enable practical application of 2D membranes for continuous separation.
