Neuromelanin accumulation in patients with schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Fumihiko Ueno et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with schizophrenia have increased levels of neuromelanin in the substantia nigra, suggesting that it may serve as a potential biomarker for stratifying schizophrenia.

Diagnostic performance of neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging for patients with Parkinson's disease and factor analysis for its heterogeneity: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Se Jin Cho et al.

Summary: Neuromelanin-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging showed good diagnostic performance in discriminating patients with Parkinson's disease from healthy controls. Factors such as disease duration, imaging parameters, and segmentation methods were found to influence the diagnostic performance. Further investigations comparing these factors and optimizing parameters are necessary to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Association between neuromelanin-sensitive MRI signal and psychomotor slowing in late-life depression

Kenneth Wengler et al.

Summary: This study showed that dopamine function abnormalities are related to slowed gait speed in older adults with late-life depression. While NM-MRI signal could predict treatment response to L-DOPA, it did not demonstrate associations with baseline gait speed, processing speed, or depression severity. Early findings suggest an increase in the NM-MRI signal after 3 weeks of L-DOPA treatment, indicating potential as a marker for dopamine-related psychomotor slowing.

Network-based functional connectivity predicts response to exposure therapy in unmedicated adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Tracey C. Shi et al.

Summary: This study identified altered functional connectivity in OCD patients between task-positive regions in the temporal gyri and regions of the cingulo-opercular and default networks. Specifically, a lower score in one of the identified independent subcomponents significantly predicted greater symptom reduction with exposure and ritual prevention therapy. These findings suggest that an altered balance between task-positive and task-negative regions may contribute to the difficulty in controlling intrusive thoughts or urge in OCD patients.

Substantia nigra neuromelanin magnetic resonance imaging in patients with different subtypes of Parkinson disease

Summary: Neuromelanin (NM) concentration in patients with Parkinson's disease decreases gradually as the disease progresses, and differs significantly between different motor subtypes. Using NM-MRI technology can help evaluate the progression of Parkinson's disease and differentiate between tremor dominant and postural instability and gait difficulty subtypes.

Altered fronto-amygdalar functional connectivity predicts response to cognitive behavioral therapy in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder

Summary: This study found alterations in resting-state functional connectivity between the basolateral amygdala and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex in children and adolescents with OCD, which increased following treatment with exposure and response prevention. Stronger connectivity between these regions before treatment predicted greater reduction in OCD symptoms posttreatment.

Standardized Data Acquisition for Neuromelanin-sensitive Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Substantia Nigra

Garrett Salzman et al.

Summary: The dopaminergic system is crucial for healthy cognition and neuropsychiatric disorders, and neuromelanin-sensitive MRI is a useful method for measuring neuromelanin in dopaminergic neurons. However, challenges include limited field-of-view and lack of standardized protocols for data acquisition.
