Formation of Complex Organic Molecules in Hot Molecular Cores through Nondiffusive Grain-surface and Ice-mantle Chemistry

Robin T. Garrod et al.

Summary: A new, comprehensive model of gas-grain chemistry in hot molecular cores is introduced, incorporating both nondiffusive and diffusive reactions to accurately reproduce the abundances of various molecules. The model identifies the temperature range and production mechanisms of complex organic molecules (COMs), with the nondiffusive chemistry playing a significant role in the early formation of COMs. New surface/ice reactions involving CH and CH2 are found to contribute substantially to COM formation.

Synthetic Approaches to Complex Organic Molecules in the Cold Interstellar Medium

Eric Herbst et al.

Summary: The observation and synthesis of organic molecules in interstellar space is an exciting and rapidly growing field in astrochemistry. Spectroscopic observations have detected over 250 molecules in interstellar clouds. This review focuses on the various explanations for the formation of complex organic molecules in the low-temperature interstellar medium. Gas-phase and granular processes are both believed to play a role, but the dominant mechanisms at such low temperatures are still disputed.

Radical Recombination during the Phase Transition of Interstellar CO Ice

Jiao He et al.

Summary: Complex organic molecules (COMs) can be efficiently produced in ice mixtures that simulate the ice mantle on cosmic dust grains. The mechanism that brings the reactive species together in the ice has been debated, but recent experimental findings suggest that the separation of minor species during phase transition could be an important mechanism for COM formation. Laboratory experiments have provided evidence supporting this new mechanism by observing the recombination of radicals during the CO phase transition.

Diffusion Activation Energy and Desorption Activation Energy for Astrochemically Relevant Species on Water Ice Show No Clear Relation

Kenji Furuya et al.

Summary: The activation energies for desorption and surface diffusion of adsorbed molecules on dust grains are important parameters in interstellar chemistry. While the desorption activation energy can be measured in the laboratory, the data for the surface diffusion activation energy is limited. In this study, the researchers experimentally measured the surface diffusion activation energy for several adsorbed species on water-ice surfaces and found that the scaling factor ranges from 0.2 to 0.7 depending on the species. They also conducted multiple simulations to address the uncertainties and identified key species for further investigation.

Understanding the impact of diffusion of CO in the astrochemical models

Kinsuk Acharyya

Summary: The diffusion barriers of carbon monoxide on the surface of interstellar dust grains play a crucial role in determining the abundance of various molecules. Different diffusion barriers result in significant variations in the abundance of solid CO, CO2, and other species. Models with higher diffusion barriers show better agreement with observed abundances compared to models with lower diffusion barriers.

Phase Transition of Interstellar CO Ice

Jiao He et al.

Summary: Among the diverse molecular species in interstellar clouds, many are organic molecules that could potentially serve as the molecular basis for the origin of life on Earth. Laboratory experiments suggest that at extremely low temperatures, CO ice undergoes a phase transition from a disordered phase to a polycrystalline phase, potentially promoting the mobility and reactivity of buried species without the need for diffusion. This reorganization of CO ice at temperatures below 10 K may play a crucial role in driving molecular complexity in interstellar clouds.
