Development, Diversity and Dynamics of Plant Architecture in Utricularia subgenus Polypompholyx - Towards Understanding Evolutionary Processes in the Lentibulariaceae

Markus S. Reut et al.

Summary: This study investigated the nature of different types of stolons in Utricularia subgenus Polypompholyx through scanning electron microscopy, as well as statistically analyzed the correlations between stolon types and other traits across 56 species. The results showed that stolon types were taxonomically relevant and correlated to the distribution/climate, and they diverged with speciation events in Australia. Additionally, the study found that seedlings of Genlisea and Polypompholyx exhibited similar developmental patterns.

The complete mitochondrial genome of carnivorous Genlisea tuberosa (Lentibulariaceae): Structure and evolutionary aspects

Ramon Guedes Matos et al.

Summary: This study sequenced and characterized the mitochondrial genome of the tuberous carnivorous plant Genlisea tuberosa, revealing dynamic changes in the mitogenome that may be reflections of the carnivorous lifestyle. The findings provide valuable information for further studies and enhance our understanding of mitochondrial genome evolution.

Structural gradients and anisotropic hydraulic conductivity in the enigmatic eel traps of carnivorous corkscrew plants (Genlisea spp.)

Cora F. Carmesin et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the underground eel traps of corkskrew plants have structural gradients and hydraulic anisotropy, suggesting a highly fine-tuned system for efficient prey movement, retention, and digestion capacities. It also indicates that the retrorse hairs inside the trap neck provide resistance against the movement of matter towards the vesicle, contributing to the ongoing debate on whether these traps can actively generate water streams to promote prey capture.

The hypoxia-reoxygenation stress in plants

Jose Leon et al.

Summary: Plants are highly adaptable to changing adverse environmental conditions, particularly in response to oxygen levels which have significant impacts on growth and development. The transition from hypoxia to reoxygenation can lead to cell damage due to oxidative stress, and further research is needed to understand this process. Studying molecular events related to gene expression regulation during hypoxia and reoxygenation will be crucial for improving agricultural biotechnology in the context of global climate change.

Molecular responses of legumes to abiotic stress: post-translational modifications of proteins and redox signaling

Manuel A. Matamoros et al.

Summary: Legumes can reduce the demand for nitrogen fertilizers and contribute to sustainable agriculture by fixing nitrogen in symbiotic root nodules. However, global changes may increase exposure to abiotic stresses and negatively impact crop production. The complex regulation of whole plant physiology and nitrogen fixation in legumes under abiotic stress involves redox-based protein post-translational modifications, which play critical roles in plant acclimation and stress tolerance.

Combining molecular and geographical data to infer the phylogeny of Lamiales and its dispersal patterns in and out of the tropics

Luiz Henrique M. Fonseca

Summary: Lamiales is a challenging order of flowering plants with global distribution, and a comprehensive phylogeny was reconstructed using DNA sequences to infer dispersal patterns in tropical and extratropical regions. All families were recovered as monophyletic, with Bignoniaceae and Plantaginaceae standing out. The study revealed higher rates of transition from extratropics to tropics, showing a rare pattern of transitions to the tropics throughout the upper Cretaceous and Tertiary.

Extra base hits: Widespread empirical support for instantaneous multiple-nucleotide changes

Alexander G. Lucaci et al.

Summary: Despite prevailing wisdom that simultaneous substitutions of more than one nucleotide in a codon are rare, a study found widespread statistical support for multiple-hit models in evolutionary analyses. Synonymous codon island jumping among serine codons was identified as a significant contributor to the signal of multiple substitutions. Continued evaluation of assumptions underlying evolutionary models is necessary for improving evolutionary inference accuracy.

Arabidopsis thaliana PrimPol is a primase and lesion bypass DNA polymerase with the biochemical characteristics to cope with DNA damage in the nucleus, mitochondria, and chloroplast

Paola L. Garcia-Medel et al.

Summary: AtPrimPol is a novel DNA polymerase in Arabidopsis thaliana that functions as both a TLS polymerase and a primase, capable of bypassing DNA lesions and localizing in the nucleus, mitochondria, and chloroplast. Its enzymatic capabilities suggest a predominant role in avoiding replication fork collapse in plant genomes.

Reactive oxygen species and organellar signaling

Su Yin Phua et al.

Summary: The evolution of photosynthesis in plants has been crucial but has also led to challenges in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Multiple forms of ROS are generated in various plant cell compartments, requiring a sophisticated network of ROS detoxification and signaling tailored to individual organelles to safeguard the cell as a whole.

Weak selection on synonymous codons substantially inflates dN/dS estimates in bacteria

Shakibur Rahman et al.

Summary: Research shows that synonymous codon substitutions are not always selectively neutral, and conventional dN/dS analyses may overestimate the frequency of positive diversifying selection and underestimate the strength of purifying selection. By analyzing two classes of synonymous substitutions, it was found that this discrepancy can be adequately explained by very weak selection with a mean product of population size and selection coefficient, Ns = 0.8.

Summary: The study investigated the evolutionary dynamics of plastomes in the recently derived Pedicularis sect. Cyathophora, revealing significant differences in gene content and structure among species. The inverted repeat (IR) region in this section showed expansions and contractions, with multiple gene losses and replacements observed in comparison with autotrophic relatives and other Pedicularis spp. This study provides evidence for plastome evolution in the transition from autotrophy to heterotrophy.
