Micellar Curcumin: Pharmacokinetics and Effects on Inflammation Markers and PCSK-9 Concentrations in Healthy Subjects in a Double-Blind, Randomized, Active-Controlled, Crossover Trial

Juergen Grafeneder et al.

Summary: The study found that micellar curcumin has better bioavailability compared to native curcumin, but does not exhibit anti-inflammatory effects in the chosen model. However, subjects receiving micellar curcumin showed a significant reduction in PCSK9 concentrations after 7 days.

Increasing Post-Digestive Solubility of Curcumin Is the Most Successful Strategy to Improve its Oral Bioavailability: A Randomized Cross-Over Trial in Healthy Adults and In Vitro Bioaccessibility Experiments

Sandra Flory et al.

Summary: This study compared the oral bioavailability of curcumin from different formulations and found a significant increase in bioavailability for micellar curcumin and curcumin-gamma-cyclodextrin complexes, likely due to increased post-digestive stability and solubility. However, strategies targeting post-absorptive processes appear to be ineffective in improving the bioavailability of curcumin.

Effects of food matrix and probiotics on the bioavailability of curcumin in different nanoformulations

Juan Han et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that fasting treatment and co-ingestion with sugar can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin in Cur-NEs and Cur-SWNTs, respectively. Ingesting regular kibble along with curcumin can reduce absorption, and milk co-ingestion with Cur-NE is not recommended. The presence of Bb-12 in the gut can reduce curcumin bioavailability, which can be attenuated by SWNTs and NLCs nanoformulations but not NEs. The protective effects of SWNTs and NLCs against curcumin degradation by Bb-12 were identified as the reason for this difference.

Cyclodextrins, Natural Compounds, and Plant Bioactives-A Nutritional Perspective

Svenja Wuepper et al.

Summary: Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides with unique structures that enhance the water solubility and bioavailability of lipophilic substances. Complexation with cyclodextrins can improve the stability and bioactivity of natural compounds, while gamma CD itself exhibits metabolic activity, presenting new opportunities for applications.

Enhanced metabolic bioavailability of tetrahydrocurcumin after oral supplementation of a γ-cyclodextrin curcumin complex

Christian Hundshammer et al.

Summary: The study showed that ?-cyclodextrin enhances the oral and metabolic bioavailability of curcumin and tetrahydrocurcumin, respectively, with a threefold increase in serum tetrahydrocurcumin compared to curcumin after just 4 weeks. This is likely due to improved uptake of cyclodextrin complexed curcumin, as demonstrated by in vitro studies, metabolic turnover, and the prolonged plasma half-life of tetrahydrocurcumin.
