Hidden impacts of conservation management on fertility of the critically endangered kakapo

Andrew Digby et al.

Summary: Hand-rearing can negatively impact the reproductive fertility of male birds, while the fertility of females is not affected. However, having multiple mates and copulations can increase fertility. These findings have significant implications for the conservation management of threatened bird species.

Low hatching success in the critically endangered kakapo is driven by early embryo mortality not infertility

J. L. Savage et al.

Summary: Reproductive failure is a major obstacle to recovery in many endangered species, including the critically endangered kakapo bird. Recent studies show that fertilization failure is rare in non-threatened bird species, but distinguishing between causes of fertilization failure and embryo death is crucial for conservation management. This study on kakapo eggs found that the majority were fertilized, providing a more accurate estimate of fertility in a wild population, and also demonstrated that artificial insemination can result in more sperm reaching the egg in a wild bird species.

Key features of the genetic architecture and evolution of host-microbe interactions revealed by high-resolution genetic mapping of the mucosa-associated gut microbiome in hybrid mice

Shauni Doms et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of host genetics on gut microbial traits using a powerful genetic mapping approach. The results reveal high heritability of mucosa-associated bacterial taxa and identify 428 genetic loci influencing these bacteria through genome-wide association mapping. Additionally, candidate genes associated with human diseases and immune function are identified.

Gut microbiome heritability is nearly universal but environmentally contingent

Laura Grieneisen et al.

Summary: Analysis of 16,234 gut microbiome profiles from 585 wild baboons collected over 14 years revealed that host genetic effects on the gut microbiome are nearly universal. The study found that 97% of microbiome phenotypes were significantly heritable, with heritability being greater in the dry season, with low diet diversity, and in older hosts. These findings suggest the potential for selection on microbiome characteristics as a host phenotype.
