Massive genome inversion drives coexistence of divergent morphs in common quails

Ines Sanchez-Donoso et al.

Summary: This study discovered a large inversion in the genome of the common quail, which results in the presence of two distinct forms with different physical characteristics. Despite the high mobility of the common quail, individuals with the inversion exhibit restricted geographical distribution, poorer flight efficiency, and shorter migratory distances or no migration.

The Quail Game Farming Sector in Spain

Francisco P. Caravaca et al.

Summary: This study surveyed quail game farms in Spain and found that the industry is divided into complete-cycle farms and farms that focus on the finishing phase of quail raising. These farms primarily produce quails with good flying abilities for intensive hunting and shooting practices, and offer transportation and releasing services. This alternative poultry sector has become an important industry in Spain.

Island songbirds as windows into evolution in small populations

Thibault Leroy et al.

Summary: This study confirms that island species have lower census population sizes and effective population sizes, resulting in lower nucleotide diversity in coding regions, higher ratios of non-synonymous to synonymous polymorphisms, and lower adaptive substitution rates.
