Reproductive biology of wild and domesticated Ensete ventricosum: Further evidence for maintenance of sexual reproductive capacity in a vegetatively propagated perennial crop

S. Tamrat et al.

Summary: In this study, the sexual reproductive capacity of wild and domesticated enset, a tropical banana relative and Ethiopian food security crop, was compared. The study found that despite long-term vegetative propagation, sexual reproductive capacity has been maintained in domesticated enset. Certain traits may still be under selection through rare sexually reproductive events. Understanding sexual propagation in vegetative crops may have applications in germplasm conservation and plant breeding.

Prioritising crop wild relatives to enhance agricultural resilience in sub-Saharan Africa under climate change

David Satori et al.

Summary: Climate change is predicted to disproportionately affect sub-Saharan Africa, threatening smallholder agriculture and deepening food insecurity. Introducing more climate-resilient crops through breeding with crop wild relatives is crucial. Evaluation of 29 major crops' crop wild relatives, their traits, conservation status, and setting new priorities for their conservation and breeding programs is important in building agricultural resilience in a changing climate.

Spatial characterization and distribution modelling of Ensete ventricosum (wild and cultivated) in Ethiopia

Meron Awoke Eshetae et al.

Summary: The study utilized spatial overlay analysis and the maximum entropy model to investigate the spatial characteristics and distribution of enset in Ethiopia. Results showed that enset is mainly distributed in the tropic-cool/sub-humid Agroecological Zones in the southwestern, south-central, and northeastern parts of the country.

De-Domestication: An Extension of Crop Evolution

Dongya Wu et al.

Summary: Researchers summarized the process of crop de-domestication, the ecological roles of de-domesticates, the mechanisms underlying crop de-domestication syndromes, and the conditions favoring de-domestication events. Recent de-domestication studies have expanded our understanding of the complexity of crop evolution and highlighted the genetic novelties of de-domesticates beneficial for modern crop breeding.
