Current and future distribution of Ixodes scapularis ticks in Quebec: Field validation of a predictive model

Marion Ripoche et al.

Summary: The incidence of Lyme disease is increasing in Quebec and is closely linked to the distribution of Ixodes scapularis ticks. A time-to-establishment model developed in 2012 accurately predicted tick distribution and the increase in human population exposure. The model estimated an average speed of tick range expansion of 18 km/year in Quebec, with 90% of the human population exposed by 2027.

Reported County-Level Distribution of Lyme Disease Spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia mayonii (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), in Host-Seeking Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Contiguous United States

Amy C. Fleshman et al.

Summary: Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, shows a more limited distribution of spirochetes compared to the broad distribution of vector ticks. Understanding the distribution of Lyme disease spirochetes in ticks can provide data-driven explanations of epidemiological trends and recommendations for prevention strategies in at-risk communities.

Whole genome genotyping reveals discrete genetic diversity in north-east Atlantic maerl beds

Tom L. Jenkins et al.

Summary: Genomic analysis revealed that maerl beds of P. calcareum in the north-east Atlantic are geographically structured due to limited dispersal potential and connectivity. Unique genetic diversity of P. calcareum in the Fal Estuary, south-west England, was shaped by geographical isolation and lack of gene flow with other populations, separate from closely related species. Preserving the accumulated genetic diversity of P. calcareum is crucial for enhancing resilience to climate and environmental changes, requiring conservation management at a site-by-site level in western Europe.
