Mussel antiviral transcriptome response and elimination of viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV)

Amaro Saco et al.

Summary: In this study, mussels were challenged with viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV), and the viral load was eliminated after 24 hours. Mussels showed antiviral activity towards VHSV, indicating that the virus was recognized and eliminated by the mussel immune system, confirming that mussels are not VHSV vectors in the marine environment. The study also revealed the involvement of cytoplasmic viral sensors, JAK-STAT pathway activation, and various downstream antiviral effectors in the mussel immune response.

Ancestral Physical Stress and Later Immune Gene Family Expansions Shaped Bivalve Mollusc Evolution

Tim Regan et al.

Summary: Bivalve molluscs, with 20,000 species globally, are crucial for ecosystem engineering and food security, yet little is known about their evolutionary adaptation strategies. Recent advances in long-read sequencing have allowed for accurate genome assemblies and revealed expansions in gene families across bivalve genomes as a response to evolutionary pressures.

The Evolution and Diversity of Interleukin-17 Highlight an Expansion in Marine Invertebrates and Its Conserved Role in Mucosal Immunity

Amaro Saco et al.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution of IL-17 gene family and observed a significant expansion in marine molluscs, particularly in mussels. It was found that IL-17 isoforms in mussels were conserved among individuals and shared between closely related species, with specific isoforms responding to a waterborne infection. The involvement of IL-17 in mucosal immune responses might be conserved in higher vertebrates from ancestral lineages.

The evolution of the metazoan Toll receptor family and its expression during protostome development

Andrea Orus-Alcalde et al.

Summary: TLRs play a crucial role in immunity and development, and are classified into V-type/scc and P-type/mcc TLRs. Phylogenetic analysis revealed three major clades of TLRs: clade alpha in cnidarians, ecdysozoans, and spiralians; clade beta in deuterostomes, ecdysozoans, and spiralians; and clade gamma only in spiralians. TLRs are expressed during development in all species analyzed, suggesting a broad role in animal development.
