Lycopene in the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases

Sylwia Przybylska et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of human mortality worldwide. Oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in the development of CVD. Lycopene, a bioactive food ingredient with high antioxidant potential, is increasingly promoted in the diet for preventing cardiovascular problems. Epidemiological studies show a reduced risk of CVD with lycopene consumption. However, research on its protective effects is controversial.

PPAR Ligands Induce Antiviral Effects Targeting Perturbed Lipid Metabolism during SARS-CoV-2, HCV, and HCMV Infection

Marialuigia Fantacuzzi et al.

Summary: The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased research efforts in developing novel strategies to combat viral infections. Viral infections have been shown to significantly impact host metabolism, with studies focusing on these metabolic changes and suggesting new strategies to counteract the perturbed metabolism. This review focuses on PPARs, nuclear receptors that regulate multiple metabolic actions, and the effects of PPAR ligands during viral infections.

Acacetin attenuates diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy by inhibiting oxidative stress and energy metabolism via PPAR-α/AMPK pathway

Fei Song et al.

Summary: Acacetin has therapeutic effect on diabetic cardiomyopathy by inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, and may achieve this effect by increasing the expression of PPAR-α and pAMPK. This study demonstrates the new application of acacetin for treating diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Ischemia-reperfusion damage is attenuated by GQ-11, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α/γ agonist, after aorta clamping in rats

Jacqueline Cavalcante Silva et al.

Summary: I/R damage is a major challenge in cardiothoracic surgeries, characterized by exacerbated damage signals resulting from blood supply restriction and subsequent flow restoration. Inflammation and oxidative stress play important roles in I/R damage. This study suggests that the PPAR agonist GQ-11 could be a promising agent to prevent tissue dysfunction and death after cardiothoracic surgeries.

DNA methylation of FTO promotes renal inflammation by enhancing m6A of PPAR-α in alcohol-induced kidney injury

Ju-Tao Yu et al.

Summary: Alcohol consumption increases the risk of kidney injury by activating NLRP3 inflammasomes and NF-κB signaling, leading to inflammation. FTO epigenetically modifies PPAR-α through demethylation, resulting in renal inflammation.

The Role of PPAR Alpha in the Modulation of Innate Immunity

Maja Grabacka et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha in regulating innate immunity, discussing its interaction with inflammatory transcription factor signaling, pattern-recognition receptor signaling, and the endocannabinoid system. The review also highlights the immunomodulatory functions of PPAR alpha during parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections, as well as its impact on reactive oxygen and nitrogen species production, phagocytosis, and macrophage, innate lymphoid cell, and mast cell effector functions. The described phenomena support the use of both endogenous and pharmacological PPAR alpha agonists to address immune disorders and the development of new therapeutic solutions involving PPAR alpha activation or suppression.

Therapeutic Potential of Quercetin to Alleviate Endothelial Dysfunction in Age-Related Cardiovascular Diseases

Olina Dagher et al.

Summary: The vascular endothelium plays crucial roles in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis, regulating vascular tone, and processing biochemical substances. Dysfunction of endothelial cells may lead to chronic age-related cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease. Studies have shown that flavonoid compound quercetin, found in various food sources, may help mitigate the risk factors of endothelial dysfunction such as atherosclerosis and hypertension.
