Implication of scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy for oil content determination and seed morphology of Verbenaceae

Kainat Kanwal et al.

Summary: The search for renewable and alternative energy resources is a fiercely disputed problem in the scientific world due to the increase in energy catastrophe and accompanying environmental issues. Biodiesel has proven to be the finest sustainable alternative to gasoline, with nonedible oil-bearing seeds potentially being a cost-effective and environment-friendly resource for biodiesel production. The use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate micromorphological features of novel nonedible oil-bearing seeds of Verbenaceae for biodiesel feed stocks shows promise in aiding future research, seed identification, and authenticity.

Taxonomic and ecological significance of seed morphology and ultrastructure in species of Lotus formerly classified in Dorycnium (Leguminosae - Loteae)

T. E. Kramina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seed morphology and ultrastructure of several Lotus species using light and scanning electron microscopy. The findings revealed that seed size, shape, and color only partially distinguish different species within the studied group. The ultrastructure of the seed surface was found to be more stable around the hilum but more variable on the lateral side. The types of surface sculpture on the lateral side were not strongly correlated with taxonomic position but showed some correlations with eco-geographical patterns.

Interspecific variation of seed morphological and micro-morphological traits in the genusVicia(Fabaceae)

Seahee Han et al.

Summary: Analysis of seed macro- and micro-morphological characteristics, as well as testa texture traits revealed significant interspecific variation in the genus Vicia. A total of 20 key traits were identified that could be used to diagnose and classify Vicia species based on these variations.

Implication of scanning electron microscopy in the seed morphology with special reference to three subfamilies of Fabaceae

Abdul Waheed et al.

Summary: The research aimed to determine the morphological variation in the seeds of subfamilies Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae, and Papilionoideae using scanning electron microscope. The study revealed differences in seed features such as surface texture, color, and shape among different species, highlighting the taxonomic significance of seed morphology in these subfamilies.
