Atom Probe Tomography for the Observation of Hydrogen in Materials: A Review

Yi-Sheng Chen et al.

Summary: Atom probe tomography (APT) is a novel microscopy technique that allows for the investigation of atomic-scale hydrogen distribution at interfaces and defects in materials. This article provides an introduction to APT-based hydrogen analysis, including the challenges of distinguishing hydrogen background signals and strategies for high-quality analysis. It also reviews important findings on hydrogen distribution in various materials and discusses the limitations and future opportunities for hydrogen analysis by APT.

Origins of the hydrogen signal in atom probe tomography: case studies of alkali and noble metals

Summary: Atom probe tomography (APT) analysis provides near-atomic-scale information on the composition of complex materials. This study combines density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and APT measurements to investigate the origin of hydrogen residuals in APT experiments. The results demonstrate that material-specific physical properties strongly influence the detection of hydrogen residuals, contradicting the hypothesis of direct ionization of residual hydrogen without interaction with the specimen's surface.

Surface Microscopy of Atomic and Molecular Hydrogen from Field-Evaporating Semiconductors

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic behavior of residual hydrogen on nanometric field emitters, analyzing the relative abundances of ionic species H+, H-2(+), and H-3(+) in semiconductor specimens. The study reveals a common trend in the relative abundances of H+, H-2(+), and H-3(+) in Ga-containing semiconductors, independent of the nonmetallic component of the matrix. Additionally, the dependence of total hydrogen flux on the electric field exhibits a complex behavior that also depends on the spatial direction of the field variation.
