Synergy of Acidity and Morphology of Micro-/Mesoporous Materials in the Solid-Acid Alkylation of Toluene with 1-Decene

Alexey A. Sadovnikov et al.

Summary: Tuning the morphology of heterogeneous catalysts is essential for the design of efficient processes. This study synthesized four micro-/mesoporous composites with different morphologies using a dual-templating method, and demonstrated that the catalyst nature has a significant impact on selectivity in solid-acid alkylation. The results also showed that the morphology of catalysts plays a crucial role in this process.

Reliable surface area determination of powders and meso/macroporous materials: Small-angle X-ray scattering and gas physisorption

Carola Schlumberger et al.

Summary: This study evaluates Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) as an alternative and reliable approach for fast surface area assessment compared to the BET adsorption method. The research demonstrates that SAXS can provide surface area data consistent with standard adsorption tests and is faster and more accurate than gas adsorption methods.

Preparation of polybenzimidazole-based mixed matrix membranes containing modified-COK-12 mesoporous silica and evaluation of the mixed-gas separation performance

Griselda Castruita-de Leon et al.

Summary: This work presents the preparation and characterization of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) consisting of polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) as polymer matrix and modified COK-12 silica as filler. The addition of modified COK-12 silica improves the thermal stability and CO2 permeability of MMMs, and in some cases, enhances their selectivity.

New insights into the cocatalyst-free carbonation of vegetable oil derivatives using heterogeneous catalysts

Wander Y. Perez-Sena et al.

Summary: Cyclic carbonates are important platform molecules with various industrial applications. There have been limited studies on fully heterogeneous catalysts for the carbonation of epoxidized vegetable oils. This study investigated the carbonation of epoxidized methyl oleate using different heterogeneous catalysts, and found that catalysts supported on mesoporous materials showed improved catalytic performance.

A high-performance electrochemical sensor based on a mesoporous silica/titania material and cobalt(II) phthalocyanine for sensitive pentachlorophenol determination

Marilia Reginato de Barros et al.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of a novel titania/silica hybrid xerogel subsequently modified with 4-methylpyridine (4-Pic), named TiSi4Pic(+)Cl(-), is reported. Anchoring cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) in TiSi4Pic(+)Cl(-) showed greater electroanalytical sensitivity over other sensors built with these materials. A novel electroanalytical method was developed to quantify the noxious biocide pentachlorophenol (PCP) for environmental monitoring, which exhibited high accuracy.

Efficient and Spatially Controlled Functionalization of SBA-15 and Initial Results in Asymmetric Rh-Catalyzed 1,2-Additions under Confinement

Ann-Katrin Beurer et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method for selectively functionalizing the mesoporous surface, which has been successfully applied to the asymmetric Rh-catalyzed 1,2-addition reaction. The results demonstrate that the catalyst selectively immobilized in the mesopores shows better catalytic performance, further advancing the field of catalysis.

Mechanisms and Intermediates in the True Liquid Crystal Templating Synthesis of Mesoporous Silica Materials

Johanna R. Bruckner et al.

Summary: The study uses small-angle X-ray scattering to monitor the structural evolution during templating process of mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) produced by true liquid crystal templating (TLCT). It reveals the formation of an intermediary liquid crystal phase as a key step to the success of templating process, connecting the structural parameters of the initial LLC and the MSM via a simple theoretical model. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the TLCT process and pave the way for predictable synthesis of new MSMs in the future.

Confinement Effects for Efficient Macrocyclization Reactions with Supported Cationic Molybdenum Imido Alkylidene N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

Felix Ziegler et al.

Summary: By utilizing cationic molybdenum imido alkylidene N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes confined in tailored ordered mesoporous silica, high macrocyclization selectivities up to 98% and high substrate concentrations up to 0.1 M can be achieved. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that high conversions are a result of the proximity between the surface-bound catalyst and surface-located substrates, leading to increased reaction efficiency.

Ordered Mesoporous Carbons via Self-Assembly of Tailored Block Copolyethers for Pore Size-Dependent Applications

Felix Markus et al.

Summary: By using an organocatalytic polymerization method, well-defined amphiphilic block copolyethers can be prepared and applied as structure-directing agents in a standard soft templating process to deliver ordered mesoporous carbons with monomodal and narrowly distributed pore diameters. Selective tuning of pore diameters in the range of 6-18 nm is achievable by judiciously choosing the properties of the structure-directing agents, potentially reducing the effort required to obtain systematically altered materials.
