Characterization of essential oils and volatiles from the aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. (Lamiaceae) using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in combination with GC-MS

Majid Mohammadhosseini et al.

Summary: This study reports the chemical profiles of the essential oils and volatiles obtained from the aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. using microwave-assisted hydrodistillation and headspace solid phase microextraction approaches combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry quantification. The results show that the essential oils mainly consist of oxygenated monoterpenes, while the volatiles are dominated by non-terpene hydrocarbons. Furthermore, it is suggested that combining these two methods can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition of a specific plant sample.

Headspace GC/MS and fast GC e-nose combined with chemometric analysis to identify the varieties and geographical origins of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe)

Dai-xin Yu et al.

Summary: This study used headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and fast gas chromatography electronic nose to distinguish the varieties and geographical origins of dried gingers from seven major production areas in China. The results showed that the combination of chemometric analysis and flavor information extracted by fast GC e-nose can accurately identify the varieties and geographical origins of ginger.

Microwave-assisted hydrodistillation extraction based on microwave-assisted preparation of deep eutectic solvents coupled with GC-MS for analysis of essential oils from clove buds

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: In recent years, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely used as green and sustainable solvents for the extraction of natural products. This study used a microwave-assisted preparation technique to form DESs, and combined them with microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) for the extraction of essential oils from clove buds. The results showed that DES-based MAHD yielded higher content and composition of essential oils compared to other extraction methods.

Summary: The study focused on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by human peripheral blood monocytes, using HS-SPME-2D-GC/TOF-MS technology for identification, and discovered 91 VOCs belonging to eight different chemical classes. The results indicated that HS-SPME-2D-GC/TOF-MS is more suitable for identifying specific VOC profiles produced by human monocytes than 1D-GC/Orbitrap-MS.

Summary: Volatilomics, the study of all biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted by an organism or system, is a potential novel tool for taxonomy, fitness, and ecological functioning. In this study, two species of coral endosymbiotic microalgae were investigated for their BVOC emissions using GC-MS and GC x GC-TOFMS, with GC x GC showing higher resolution and more identified compounds compared to GC-MS.
