Evaluation of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs in two penguin species from Antarctica

Patricia Morales et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of various POPs in penguin eggs in Antarctica, finding differences in concentrations between chinstrap and gentoo penguins, with PCBs being the predominant pollutant. Interspecies differences in POP levels correspond well with potential trophic position differences among species.

Effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on gonad development: Mechanistic insights from fish and mammals

G. Delbes et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been found to impact reproductive health, with early exposures during critical developmental stages having immediate effects on gonadal and reproductive tract development, as well as potential long-term effects on reproductive health in both males and females. Understanding the mechanisms regulating sex determination, differentiation, and gonadal development in fish and rodents has improved our understanding of how EDCs affect reproduction.

Hair Sample Analysis as a Method of Monitoring Exposure to Bisphenol A in Dogs

Krystyna Makowska et al.

Summary: This study used hair analysis to evaluate the exposure of 30 dogs to BPA. The results showed that 93.33% of the samples had BPA concentrations above the detection limit, with levels ranging from 7.05 ng/g to 436 ng/g. Significant differences in BPA concentrations were found between dogs with different weights. The study suggests that dogs are highly exposed to BPA and that it may play a role in their health.

Comprehensive LC-MS/MS method combined with tandem hybrid hydrolysis for multiple exposure assessment of multiclass environmental pollutants

Seunghwa Lee et al.

Summary: To assess the combined effects of environmental pollutants (EPOLs), a comprehensive analytical method was developed to simultaneously analyze multiple EPOLs. The method overcame technical challenges associated with enzyme hydrolysis, simultaneous extraction, and analysis. The method was validated and showed potential for long-term, large-scale, and data-rich human biomonitoring of EPOLs.

Occurrence and seasonal variation of several endocrine disruptor compounds (pesticides, bisphenols, musks and UV-filters) in water and sediments from the estuaries of Tagus and Douro Rivers (NE Atlantic Ocean coast)

Sara C. Cunha et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) in water and sediment samples from the estuaries of Tagus and Douro Rivers. The results showed that pesticide residues and bisphenols were more contaminated in the Tagus estuary, while polycyclic musks and UV-filters had lower levels of contamination in both estuaries.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Are Positively Associated with Thyroid Hormones in an Arctic Seabird

Amalie Vigdel Ask et al.

Summary: The study investigated the associations between PFAS, thyroid hormones, and body condition in Arctic seabirds, revealing higher PFAS concentrations in male kittiwakes and different correlations between PFAS and thyroid hormones based on sex. Although a link between PFAS and thyroid hormones in kittiwakes was observed, causal relationships were not confirmed, emphasizing the need for future experimental research. The contrasting relationships between PFAS and body condition for males and females warrant further investigation.

Multiresidues of environmental contaminants in bats from Turkey

Ozgur Kuzukiran et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the residues of pesticides and organic contaminants in the carcasses of two bat species widely distributed in Turkey, finding multiple pesticides and organic contaminants in most of the bats' carcasses. The results suggest that bats can be used as potential bioindicators to assess environmental pollution.

Assessment of exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in dogs by fur analysis

Krystyna Makowska et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the exposure of 30 dogs to six selected PFASs through the analysis of fur samples, with all PFASs detected in the canine fur samples. No statistically significant differences were found based on gender, age, and body weight of the animals. The study confirmed the suitability of fur samples for biomonitoring of PFASs exposure in domestic animals.

Co-exposure and health risks of parabens, bisphenols, triclosan, phthalate metabolites and hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons based on simultaneous detection in urine samples from guangzhou, south China

Xiaojing Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the detection frequencies for OH-PAHs and mPAEs in urine samples exceeded 90%, with mPAEs showing the highest concentrations, followed by OH-PAHs and triclosan. The main PAHs are mainly exposed to humans through inhalation, while chemicals added to personal care products are mainly exposed to humans through oral intake and dermal contact. Risk assessments based on Monte Carlo simulation indicated that approximately 30% of the subjects suffered non-carcinogenic risks from mPAEs and OHPAHs, with mPAEs accounting for 89% of the total risk.

Sonja Schanzer et al.

Summary: A QuEChERS sample preparation method was developed for small wildlife animals' liver tissues to analyze pesticide and pollutant exposure, allowing for multiresidue analysis with gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The methods were validated with representative analytes, showing satisfactory results in recovery, precision, and linear range. The new micro QuEChERS method requires minute amounts of biomaterial and is a sophisticated technique for determining exposure to different contaminants.
