Negative Regulation of RpoS-mediated STM1703 in Biofilm Formation of Salmonella Pullorum

Zheng Feng et al.

Summary: Both RpoS and c-di-GMP play a role in biofilm formation of Salmonella Pullorum, but their relationship remains unclear. This study found that the deletion of rpoS in strain S9S led to higher transcription level of the STM1703 gene, lower c-di-GMP concentration, and decreased biofilm-forming ability compared to strain S9. Deleting the STM1703 gene in strains S9 and S9S significantly increased c-di-GMP concentration and biofilm-forming ability. qRT-PCR analysis showed that rpoS deletion or P193L substitution in RpoS increased the transcription level of the STM1703 gene by decreasing the transcription levels of csrA and STM1344 genes. Overall, RpoS-mediated STM1703 negatively regulates biofilm formation of S. Pullorum by degrading c-di-GMP.

Antibiotic resistance of fecal carriage of Escherichia coli from pig farms in China: a meta-analysis

Mingyang Li et al.

Summary: Fecal carriage of E. coli in Chinese pig farms shows high resistance to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, tetracycline, ampicillin, and florfenicol. Subgroup analysis revealed that the resistance of E. coli to antibiotics was closely related to sample size and the health condition of the pigs, with ESBL-producing E. coli demonstrating higher resistance ratios to other antibiotics. Future collection of antibiotic resistance data in pig farms should be more precise and rely on local surveys.

Characterization of Bacterial Microbiota Composition in Healthy and Diarrheal Early-Weaned Tibetan Piglets

Qinghui Kong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the bacterial microbiota structure in Tibetan piglets and provide a theoretical basis for preventing and controlling diarrhea. The study found significant differences in the microbiota composition between healthy, diarrheal, and treated piglets, suggesting a disruption in the ecological balance of the intestinal microflora in diarrheal piglets. The addition of probiotics to feed may help prevent early-weaning diarrhea in piglets.

Antimicrobial drug resistance against Escherichia coli and its harmful effect on animal health

Safia Arbab et al.

Summary: Multidrug resistance poses a threat to antibiotic treatment of infections, with Escherichia coli acting as a reservoir. Current antibiotic use and demographic factors contribute to increased multidrug resistance. E. coli acquires multidrug resistance through genetic adaptation to environmental changes, with little threat during the host's lifespan.

Antimicrobial resistance, virulence genes, and phylogenetic characteristics of pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from patients and swine suffering from diarrhea

Kyung-Hyo Do et al.

Summary: This study compared antimicrobial resistance, O-serogroups, virulence genes, and multi-locus sequence type of Escherichia (E.) coli between isolates from pigs and patients suffering from diarrhea, as well as the most prevalent pathogenic E. coli strain from swine isolates in Korea. The results showed that isolates from pigs exhibited significantly higher resistance to fluoroquinolone compared to isolates from patients. Stx2 gene was found in both pig and human isolates, which could potentially cause severe disease. The study also suggested that pigs could act as a reservoir for human infection and transfer antimicrobial resistance to humans.

Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins in Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica isolated from food-producing animals: Ecological study from selected national surveillance programs

Babafela Awosile et al.

Summary: This study compares the resistance of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC) in food-producing animals from nine countries. The findings reveal variability in ESC-resistant bacteria recovery among countries, which is likely influenced by individual country policies on antimicrobial use and resistance surveillance programs.

Molecular Characterization and Therapeutic Insights into Biofilm Positive Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Bovine Subclinical Mastitis

Arslan Ahmed et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the prevalence and molecular characterization of biofilm-positive S. aureus isolates from bovine subclinical mastitis and found a higher resistance to certain antibiotics in biofilm-positive isolates. The study also revealed the potential synergistic effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in combination with resistant antibiotics.

Clones of enterotoxigenic and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli implicated in swine enteric colibacillosis in Spain and rates of antibiotic resistance

Isidro Garcia-Menino et al.

Summary: The study showed that the majority of diarrheagenic E. coli in Spanish industrial pig farms were ETEC pathotype, mostly belonging to phylogroup A and clonotype CH11-24. The isolates exhibited high rates of multidrug-resistance, with notable resistance to nalidixic acid, colistin, ticarcillin, and ampicillin. Additionally, a significant proportion of isolates were ESBL-producers, with a high prevalence of mcr-carriers among them.

Multi-Locus Sequence Typing and Drug Resistance Analysis of Swine Origin Escherichia coli in Shandong of China and Its Potential Risk on Public Health

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The extensive use of antibiotics has led to antimicrobial resistance in E. coli, which can be transmitted to humans through animal products, creating a public health issue. This study investigates the drug resistance of E. coli from swine and humans in Shandong Province, highlighting the high drug resistance in swine origin E. coli. The results provide valuable insights for guiding antibiotic use, preventing the spread of drug-resistant bacteria, and analyzing the risk of antimicrobial resistance in swine farms.

Summary: The study investigated the adverse effects of pathogenic E. coli on the gut microbiota of Tibetan piglets with a history of yellow and white dysentery. Differences in microbial diversity at phylum and family levels were observed between healthy and infected piglets. Pathological alterations induced by E. coli in piglets with dysentery may provide support for effective control of diarrhoeal disease.
