Aging Hardening and Precipitation Characteristics of Extruded Mg-9Al-0.8Zn-0.2Mn-0.3Ca-0.2Y Alloy

Hyun Ji Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a new alloy, AZXW9100, with high corrosion and ignition resistance characteristics is developed. The aging hardening and Mg17Al12 precipitation behavior of this alloy are investigated and compared with a commercial AZ91 counterpart. The results show that adding small amounts of Ca and Y to AZ91 alloy significantly alters the precipitation behavior during aging.

The formation mechanism of the chill fine-grain layer with high supersaturation and its influence on the mechanical properties of die casting Al-7Si-0.5Mg alloy

Guodong Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, a chill layer with high supersaturation was observed on the surface of Al-7Si-0.5Mg die casting tensile samples. The chill layer has fine alpha-Al grains and its formation mechanism is attributed to the pre-solidified dendrites formed in the shot sleeve and the nonuniform velocity distribution of the melt. The chill layer with solute enrichment promotes the precipitation of tiny Mg2Si phase from the supersaturated alpha-Al grains, which improves the strength and ductility simultaneously.

Tensile and High-Cycle Fatigue Properties of Extruded AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y Alloy with Excellent Corrosion and Ignition Resistances

Jae Won Cha et al.

Summary: The addition of small amounts of Ca and Y to commercial Mg-Al-Zn alloys can lead to finer grains and higher microstructural homogeneity through promoting dynamic recrystallization. Despite similar tensile strengths, the extruded SEN9 alloy has higher tensile elongation compared to the extruded AZ91 alloy. In fatigue studies, the extruded SEN9 alloy exhibits a higher risk of fatigue crack initiation at low stress amplitudes.

High-Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Fatigue Strength Prediction of Differently Heat-Treated 35CrMo Steels

Mengqi Yang et al.

Summary: Different heat treatment procedures were applied to 35CrMo steel in order to obtain the optimum fatigue performance. The microstructure, tensile properties, fatigue properties, and fatigue cracking mechanisms were compared and analyzed. The results showed that both the fatigue strength and yield strength of the steel reached the maximum values at a tempering temperature of 200 degrees C.

Gueven Yarkadas et al.

Summary: The effects of nanofiber SiC addition on AZ91-1Sr alloy were investigated, resulting in improved mechanical properties with the best yield strength and hardness increment in the nanocomposite. Increased SiC content also led to enhanced creep resistance in the materials, with the dominant creep mechanism identified as dislocation climb controlled.

Effect of Lanthanum Addition on Grain Refinement and Mechanical Properties of Mg-9Li-3Al Alloy

P. Dinesh et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of lanthanum can induce microstructural changes and mechanical characteristics in Mg-9Li-3Al alloys. The addition of an appropriate amount of lanthanum is beneficial to the alloy system, resulting in grain refinement and increased tensile strength, while excessive addition may lead to grain coarsening and reduced mechanical strength.

Effect of Microstructural Features on the High-Cycle Fatigue Behavior of CoCrFeMnNi High-Entropy Alloys Deformed at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures

Gyung Tae Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of deformation twins and dislocation cell structures on the fatigue properties of the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy through rotational bending fatigue tests. It was found that prestraining at room temperature resulted in higher fatigue resistance and fatigue limit compared to prestraining at cryogenic temperature, with different aspects of micro-void formation affecting crack initiation and fatigue properties.

Summary: Study on ESCs and porosities in high-pressure die-cast AlSi10MnMg alloy revealed the impact of shot speeds on ESC formation and fracture behavior, with slower speeds leading to increased ESCs and porosities. The presence of ESCs and porosities significantly influenced the fracture morphology and crack propagation during in-situ tensile tests, indicating the importance of controlling shot speeds in die casting processes.

Comparative study of tensile and high-cycle fatigue properties of extruded AZ91 and AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y alloys

Ye Jin Kim et al.

Summary: The SEN9 alloy exhibits finer grains and more abundant particles, resulting in slightly higher tensile strength compared to the AZ91 alloy. However, the difference in strength between the two alloys is relatively small as the effects of solid-solution hardening and precipitation hardening in the AZ91 alloy offset the effects of grain-boundary hardening and dispersion hardening in the SEN9 alloy to some extent.
