Evolution of inclusions in a pipeline steel during continuous casting and hot rolling process

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Industrial trials were conducted to investigate the evolution of inclusions in pipeline steel during continuous casting and hot rolling. The composition and area fraction of inclusions changed during different stages, with smaller inclusions having a more favorable transformation. Crushing during the hot rolling process led to a decrease in the CaS content of inclusions.

Effect of Mg addition on TiN inclusions in GCr15 bearing steel

Lei Cao et al.

Summary: Compared with the original GCr15 bearing steel, Mg addition greatly reduces TiN inclusions and leads to the formation of various Mg-containing non-metallic inclusions. In situ observation and thermodynamic calculations confirm that MgO can provide nucleation sites for TiN, while MgS•MnS and MgO-MgS•MnS inclusions can also serve as positions for TiN nucleation.

Effect of a large population of seeded alumina inclusions on crack initiation and small crack fatigue crack growth in Udimet 720 nickel-base disk superalloy

J. Telesman et al.

Summary: In this study, crack initiation, crack coalescence, and small crack growth behavior of over 400 seeded inclusions in P/M Udimet 720 nickel disk alloy were monitored during interrupted low cycle fatigue testing at 650 degrees C. Two types of seeded alumina inclusions were used with average sizes of 54 μm and 122 μm, with fatigue behavior sub-categorized into four groups and detailed visual maps developed for inclusion size/cycle history. The effect of surface residual stresses on fatigue life was also investigated.

Effects of Mg and La on the evolution of inclusions and microstructure in Ca-Ti treated steel

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The evolution of inclusions and the formation of acicular ferrite in Ca-Ti treated steel after Mg and La addition were systematically investigated. The types of inclusions in the molten steel and final quenched samples were similar, but with differences in morphology, where the La-containing sample had the smallest average inclusion size and highest number density. Additionally, the percentage of acicular ferrite increased due to the increase in effective inclusions in the La-containing sample.

In-depth analysis of the fatigue mechanism induced by inclusions for high-strength bearing steels

Chao Gu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the stress distribution and fatigue behavior influenced by voids adjacent to inclusions, showing that the effects of inclusions on fatigue life reduce significantly when mechanical properties are similar. Additionally, it was found that the position of voids near inclusions plays a critical role in determining their impact on fatigue behavior.

Effect of trace Si on MgO•Al2O3 inclusion in ultra-low-carbon steel

Lei Cao et al.

Summary: Four types of Mg-Al-Si-O inclusions were observed in Mg-treated Al-deoxidized ultra-low-carbon steel, and their phase relationships were calculated using FactSage software. The stable region range of different Mg-Al-Si-O-based inclusions can be changed by altering the Si content. Experimental observations and predictions were used to establish a kinetic model describing the formation process of the inclusions.

Ultrahigh cycle fatigue fracture mechanism of high-quality bearing steel obtained through different deoxidation methods

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanism of oxide inclusions in fatigue crack initiation in the VHCF regime, revealing differences in inclusion types and their effects on fatigue life in Si- and Al-deoxidized steels. Cracks in Al-deoxidized steel are caused by calcium aluminate inclusions, while most fatigue cracks in Si-deoxidized steel are triggered by the inhomogeneity of the steel matrix. The mechanisms of fatigue fracture caused by calcium aluminate and silicate inclusions are analyzed, showing varying impacts on the fatigue life of bearing steels.

Dynamic mass variation and multiphase interaction among steel, slag, lining refractory and nonmetallic inclusions: Laboratory experiments and mathematical prediction

Ju-jin Wang et al.

Summary: The mass transfer among the multiphase interactions during the refining process of a bearing steel was studied using laboratory experiments and numerical kinetic prediction. The slag phase was found to significantly accelerate the mass transfer rate, with the system containing slag having a rate approximately 5 times larger than the system without slag. The established kinetic model accurately predicted the composition transformation of inclusions and the mass transfer of magnesium and aluminum in the steel.
